Non traditional board games

My wife and I bought Super Dungeon Explore as our Christmas present. Brilliant game, once you discard the rulebook from the box, download the proper ones and the FAQ and read up to see how they are meant to work, rather than as written :D It helps if you are in to painting miniatures too, but it's not essential.

We also just bought Cyclades, which was incredibly easy to pick up and great fun. Can't wait to play it on a largeer game.

Had a six-player game of Eclipse yesterday.

Due to the slim attention spans of six people stuck around one table, the entire game (including rule reading) took nine hours! Other than the strong martial focus the game was surprisingly fun throughout.

I don't think "slim attention span" covers it. To take nine hours for six players you'd have to be averaging two or three minutes for every individual action, which is absurd - most actions should take 30 seconds to a minute. I've played a 5-player game of Eclipse with three newbies at the table in three hours including setup and breakdown.

It's also entirely possible to play and win Eclipse without ever engaging in a fight with anything other than the Ancients. Serious diplomats with a smart eye for exploration can make it very hard and very costly to take them on, especially as they usually spend the resources saved on not developing an early military presence to multiply their science and economy.

I suppose if ALL of you had never played it and none of you know how to play, you would have to keep referring to the rule book for everything.

Our first game of Risk 2210 was about 7 hours, Game of Thrones was about 5.

I have upped my collection quite drastically.

I now own:
  1. 7 Wonders
  2. Terra Mystica
  3. Among the stars
  4. Love letters
  5. Race for the Galaxy
  6. Lost Cities
  7. Pandemic
  8. Forbidden Desert
  9. Fluxx
  10. Carcassonne

What's your thought between Among the Stars and 7 Wonders? I had a chance to play Among the Stars last week and thought it was an excellent 7 Wonders with a twist./ Not sure whether it was better or worse though as what it gains in designing the station, it looses in the feeling of upgrading and evolution.

me and the mrs are away for a week soon, we could do with a new board game to pass an evening or two, we like forbidden island and have played a bit of LOTR the board game, can you make any recommendations for board games co-op or adversarial for 2 players?

I think PoD's recommendation of 7 Wonders, Lost Cities and Pandemic are probably the way to go as none of them a particularly taxing or take up too much table space. I'd probably also throw in Dominion or Lords of Waterdeep as 2 other good games about the same level.

Personally of those i'd probably go for 7 Wonders as it will offer you something different from what you have and give you the tableau building feel.

I don't know about Lost Cities, but apart from Dominion I don't think any of the rest are particularly good suggestions as two-player games. Pandemic and LoW are best at 3-4, and 7 Wonders plays better with 4+.

Caylus is a great 2P if you can find it. Lewis and Clark might also scratch the itch, though it is better with 3. If you like the LOTR theme enough to tolerate Knizia's hideous mess of a game then the LOTR LCG is much better.

I would say 7 Wonders is an excellent choice that everyone should own, but I wouldnt call it Co-Op or particularly adversarial. It has adversarial areas, but it is much more about the decisions YOU make than defending against a direct opponent. This is pretty true of all drafting games.

Mage Wars/ Summoner Wars are very good adversarial games and have that LOTR feel, but it depends if your Mrs gels with that theme, mine personally doesn't like the D&D feel, but likes fairy tales and space games, so meh.

Forbidden Desert will replace Forbidden Island if you want that, but it does mean losing a game. Pandemic is a MUST if you want a Co-Op game.

Another good game I would recommend is Android: Netrunner

Thanks for the suggestions (again) came across the dnd board games while looking at waterdeep, quite tempted to get one (wrath of thingy most likely) as they look like a good way to introduce someone to dnd and the genre, give my gf a taste as she is on the edge a bit when it comes to dnd and RPGs in General. Does anyone have experience with the dnd board games?

My gf likes the more fantasy orientated themes than modern and guns, which is why waterdeep took my fancy and then through a little more investigation the dnd board games. I don't mind either settings really :p

I know people who do. They say they're decent dungeon crawlers in the vein of Descent, but with the advantage that everyone is playing against the game rather than one player trying to beat everyone else.

After reading this thread and being at comic con middle east a few weeks ago I picked up a second hand copy of x-wing and a y-wing expansion for the princely sum of 14 pounds. Unfortunately the upgrade bug has bitten me and 200 quid later I waiting for the rest of the fleet to arrive.

Also grabbed a copy of Tsuro from the same guy and this is an excellent game. Aside from this I am also checking out Zombicide.

Did you get any of them? Interested whether they're any good.

After playing Race for the galaxy a number of times I can now confirm this is easily my favorite game.

If you don't currently own this then it is well worth a play.

Ordered the Legend of Drizzt (as it was £30), played the solo adventure this evening and it was ok, simple to understand, not bogged down in excessive rules . Easy enough to pick up and just play (once I had popped all the bits of cardboard out) which is what I wanted as my gf is not heavily into this sort of thing but this board game may give her a nudge in the right direction.

For £30 there is an impressive amount of stuff in the box and worth it on that price, If my gf enjoys it then I will look at getting one of the other boxes as it can all be used together and would make for some nice large dungeons.

Plus another motive for me getting these games is once I have got my gf and her brother and girlfriend playing DnD board game I want to try and move them onto dungeon world and getting the DnD boxes will give me a nice collection of tiles and monsters :P

I will let you know how it played with two people when we get round to playing it and with 4 when I next see the in-laws.

Just ordered Letters From Whitechapel also - finally back down to the price I want to pay when I have the cash to pay it. Picked up the original GOSU Goblin Supremacy for £20 too so happily awaiting deliveries.

lordhughues - I wish I could find Drizzt for that price!
