Clearly a team out of position however much your affiliation makes you believe otherwise

Rooney has just signed a 5 year contract, RvP will be going nowhere if Van Gaal gets the job, the problem with RVP and a lot of players this season is the fact they didn't think much of Moyes or his methods.
Contracts mean nothing. Asset protection for the club but that's it.. Wasn't Bale 1 year in on a 4 year deal?
edit - yep

We understand negotiations between David Moyes and Ed Woodward started very early this morning. Richard Bevan, the chief executive of the League Managers' Association has been here, negotiating on behalf of David Moyes regarding his settlement but we understand a compensation deal has not yet been agreed.

If someone are willing to pay 80 million for him, I won't lose any sleep over it.
my point is contracts are broken and mean nothing.
Your original point was that we are going to struggle to attract players because we have failed to finish in the top 4.
Take your point about contracts mean nothing, attracting big players doesn't mean you have to be a top 4 team, you as a Spurs fan should know that.
Were Liverpool top 4 when they signed Torres or Suarez? Or were they attracted to the aura of the club?
They got to a Champions League final the season before Torres singed, I believe. Suarez, while talented, was also a bit of a risk, with his known temper issues especially early on. I don't think anyone anticipated that he would become, arguably, the best striker in the world either.
I'm surprised that they sacked him now, I thought they would at least wait until the season is over.
Its not that surprising.
There is a good chance 5 of the top 10 jobs in European football will be available in the summer.
Leave it till then and United will be fighting it out with other clubs for the same few top managers.
Getting it done now gives them a month head start on tying someone down, I for one wouldn't be putting my house on Van Gaal getting the job, the timing with the world cup just doesn't go in his favor.
I think ANY manager would have struggled taking over from Ferguson. He inherited a **** poor-ageing team.
My point is that it doesn't matter where you are in the league following one bad season, Man Utd are a far bigger draw than say Spurs/Everton.
That's not off the wall thinking, it's reality.
Maybe, but the type of players Utd need to attract are unlikely to go to Spurs or Everton anyway. It City, Chelsea, PSG, Madrid, Barca, Bayern who are the first choice destination for much of the new talent. A lack of CL football just make a tough job significantly tougher.
Utd are still and attractive club, but landing top players will require a well connected manager who can convince players they can turn the club round within a season.
