SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 21, 2014) - AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that it will host the "AMD Core Innovation Update" news conference in San Francisco on May 5, commencing at 9:00 a.m. PDT.

The news conference is for invited attendees; however a real-time audio and video webcast of the presentation can be accessed on the AMD Investor Relations home page: http://ir.amd.com.

Would be great if they shared plans regarding the FX line of CPU's. Will their be a successor or are they just focusing on APU's etc.

I would buy a die shrunk, higher IPC AMD 8 core. Make it happen plz..
 
Given Kaveri's just came out, I can't see anything major happening with the FX line at this current moment.
All anyone can hope for is an 8 core SR.
 
For FX, I think we're waiting on the server updates for DDR4. If Excavator makes it to 8, 12, and 16 core opterons, then we'll likely get some FX units. Since AMD's server share is so low, it's not a given that we'll see them though :(

Otherwise, the only "FX" we'll see is the rumoured Kaveri version of the Athlon 750k, and subsequent Carrizo update.

There's almost no chance of an 8-core Steamroller.
 
The current FX chips have been going since 2012, surely it's time for a refresh or at least announce what their plans are rather than leave everyone hanging for all of 2014 lol.

It might be that AMD feel it's better to wait until 14nm and DDR4 are viable. Be nice to know if they have anything in the pipeline though.

We know from Kaveri that the 4Ghz 7850K Kaveri part can trade blows with the 4.4Ghz 6800K Piledriver part, so their is a performance gain to be had.

If they could produce an Steamroller based 8 core FX chip on a smaller node, this would go a long way to improving performance and power consumption, and probably be enough for some people to want to upgrade to.

I know their are people here that think AMD don't need to release anything, but I disagree. Once Intel release Z97 and X99 AMD will face total irrelevance in the traditional CPU market from low to high end Intel have answers. Maybe AMD only want to produce APU's but if that is the case why not tell the customers..

Hoping they do bring something new out, they will get my money if they do..

That doesn't mean anything though, like at all.
PD's higher IPC than Bulldozer, overclocking didn't take a jump off the roof.

Trinity doesn't clock like Vishera, despite being the same cores, it's all about binning etc.

Kaveri may be a poor clocker, but that's not because of its IPC gain, a lot of it will be the immature process (Perhaps the architecture is also why, but that's specific to the arch)

Sandy Bridge was a decent IPC improvement and overclocking also went up.
 
It means exactly what you've just said. Kaveri doesn't clock as high. Kaveri is steamroller. If we're discussing a theoretical 8 core sr, kaveri is the best indicator we have as to how well it will perform.

Not really, because if we judged Vishera on Trinity it'd be a different story.

They'd have a mature process before they went for an 8 core SR, they'd higher bin the chips etc.


It just sounded like you were making a blanket statement at higher IPC = Lower clocks, if that's not the case, then it was just a misunderstanding.

Kaveri moves from Global Foundries' 32nm High-K Metal Gate SOI process to its bulk 28nm SHP (Super High Performance) process. The process node shift actually explains a lot about Kaveri's targeting. While the 32nm SOI process was optimized for CPU designs at high frequency, GF's bulk 28nm SHP process is more optimized for density with a frequency tradeoff. AMD refers to this as an "APU optimized" process, somewhere in between what a CPU and what a GPU needs. The result is Kaveri is really built to run at lower frequencies than Trinity/Richland, but is far more dense.

If SR were to be rolled out for the big multi-core SKUs (which it won't be), then I would suppose the lack of iGPU would enable them to opt for a process which allowed for higher clocks.

In any case, an FX SR unit just doesn't fit in with the direction AMD is taking - that being heterogeneous computing. AMD is betting the house on HSA taking off. It looks like they're leaving nothing on the CPU table at all - it's a design dead end for them.
