290x or 780ti - First world problems

Most issues are caused by the user not knowing what the **** he's doing believe it or not. So when they go NV they're all happy and satisfied. Just proves that Nv is more user friendly.

Because when you need shadowplay because you cant download dxtory or fraps then you know its good.

I probably would buy from OcUK again after the second dud card, i would get my money back an go elsewhere.

I did just that. I am afraid buying GPU's from here. Like everytime I do the boxes are open and have grease on them. Got 2 like that here. GPU's looking like they have been used when I bought brand new?

This has not happened to me at the other place I buy from. It has put me off buying here I must say. I still think OCUK is a great place to shop, but just not for certain items.

8pack is feeling your cards up with his greasy weightlifting hands

I am an experienced builder and I understand there is user error involved in most cases.
However in my case I was unlucky enough to have issues with all of my cards.

The first card arrived DOA.... the rest had instability issues WHICH never showed up in testing. The problems only show up after extended use in games.

I tested everything right down to measuring the output via the PSU.

When it comes to the R9 series vs the current Nvidia series I prefer Nvidia.

This opinion will change as things develop but as things currently stand the sheer amount of problems I have had alone? plus problems I have witnessed and read about the past 6 plus months from other users has turned me off AMD at least for this generation.

I had no doubts.

AMD fall down sometimes because they are not idiot proof (i'm not saying anyone is an idiot, i'm just generalising)

1400 / 2000 and 50% extra power limit available right there in the official Drivers, they also allow vRam and PPL overvolting as well as Core.
Basically they are completely unlocked, thats great for enthusiasts but if you get someone with no electronic sympathy who is far too enthusiastic things can very quickly go very wrong.

Its a bit of a dilemma, should AMD continue to cater for enthusiasts or should they lock them down almost completely like Nvidia, so its impossible for PEBAK's to wreck them.

I didn't buy my 290 from here, or the last GPU, but i have bough a lot of things from here and find everything very good all round.

Doesnt shadowplay have less of a performance hit than those?

By the way my issues happened when running the cards stock.

Just to be clear!! XD If my problem were as simple as me pushing the cards to far! I would be jumping for joy as It would be an easy fix haha.

Couldnt agree more humbug.

I buy a lot of stuff from here too and most of the time it's great. Some items not so great. I also find OCUK to be a bit expensive compared to other on line retailers. Some of their 1 days deal are very good here.

Ive had 1 290p and 2 290xs so far, i got all to do 1300 on the core and ive got no issues. Coincidence? Hmmm.

my first 290 lasted 2 months and then died of its own accord, the replacement came faulty and was very intermittant as to whether it would work or just refuse. The third one i bought an msi gaming edition and it came in am opened box and was clearly used previously, but i tried it any way and it wouldnt go above 10 fps in games or heaven etc.
Yet my system components are the same all i have done is change the gpu and my system is now way more stable than it ever was before.
Also if you look around the internet there is loads of people who have experienced issues with this range of cards, plus you neglected to answer the fact that even OcUK told me face to face the cards were not up to scratch and were fed up with the amount of problems the 290 range has had.

Its a shame we have never seen you around here asking for help with your apparent problems.

Usually its nothing to do with the card, but something else in the system, the fact that you had 4 go wrong suggests thats the case, uless OcUK sent you 4 dud cards.

In which case you should be sure to get your Money back :)

Just because someone has or hasnt asked for advice on OcUK does not mean automatically there `apparent problem` is user error.

Too many are quick to judge and blame user error all the time.

Between me and a few mates over the last 8 to 10 years we have at least 50 to 60 AMD/ATI and Nvidia cards of various kinds.

I have had one 6800LE suffer from the capacitor plague problem, but I replaced it before it actually started to cause problems.

My reference 8800GTS 512MB went kaput in under two years. My mate had a MSI HD6870 start having issues after a year and half and that was because it got a magnetic ball bearing caught in it(don't ask).

Everything else we had has lasted years. I still have an ancient 6600LE and a 8500GT which works OK for example.

Going by the 100s of builds I have helped people with on various forums over nearly 8 years and the feedback I got from them, only very few cards have had issues.

However, most of my experience has been of the sub £250 market.

I cannot comment too much personally on high end cards.

However, the biggest failures I saw were with mobile Nvidia cards of the G8* generation. I knew of at least a dozen instances of laptops with one of them eventually failing. However,my desktop 8500GT with a large aftermarket heatsink was fine. Go figure.

However,Gibbo said that the GTX780/R9 series had under 5% failure rate.

I had a faulty 5870(gsod), a faulty 7950, two faulty 7970 Lightning BE' s, and now have two faulty 290s. Guess I'm just unlucky.

And some are very quick to blame the card rather than them selves.

You are quick to assume that..

If you actually took the time to ask me I would point you to my 5 page thread which is on the first page of this forum.

I have had 2 such threads in the past 2 months.

Yes people are quick to blame there cards ofc but just because that happens sometimes does not mean you immediately assume someone has not tried to troubleshoot first!

Yeah,

Member A; whats the best way to stress test my 290X?

Member B; Furmark over night.

Member A; oh- the card is crap its throttling...

Member B; Set the Power Target to +50%

Member A; ah yes, its ok now.

8 Hours later...

Member A; lots of artefacts

Member B; is it overclocked?

Member A; No.

Member B; Whats it like in games?

Member A; Same, AMD Suck!

Member B; Get Nvidia, never have any problems.

Member C; A 300 Watt GPU set to pull 450 Watts for 8 Hours straight and you wonder why its broken. Derp, You two ^^^ should be banned from owning AMD GPU's!
