poking russia right next to her borders is like Sagan described it "two kids in a gasoline pool playing with matches"

They have nukes and they capable ICBM's in case everything goes mayhem, its not funny.

Wasn't long ago that Greece was next to the borders of the Soviet Union. Honestly, I know things have been as bad as it gets in Greece recently but would you have preferred to have been under the Russian yoke? Why shouldn't Ukraine have the right to the same self-determination that Greece has enjoyed?

Greece had never had borders with the Soviet Union, and what has this to do with the recently crisis in my country? Are you naive or something?

The crisis in Ukraine is not genuine, Kerry went there the next day, the west fully supports the newly appointed government, Yulia gets fully supported, she who was corrupted to the bone and still unwelcome by the vast majority of the Ukranian people. ALso, if this uprising was genuine, why wouldnt the russian majority decide for its own fate but faced with the army and called terrorists (i guess the same could have been told about the maidan protestors?), talking about self-determination there....

Also Greece, besides religious connection with the Slavs who were converted during the Byzantium years thousands years ago, have no connection to them, Ukranians ARE slavs and almost brother like to Russians, Greeks dont have ANY relation to these people, and would have never been under the Russian yoke for a myriad of reasons.

Sorry, meant the Iron Curtain. Presumably your post means you wouldn't have been happy to have been behind it?

I am not going to answer to hypothetical questions.

i have met behind-the iron curtain-citizens and told me its was great living then, some others disagree.

Besides, shouldn't the people of Ukraine hold elections to decide their own fate? are you happy with the transition of power from an elected cabinet to an unelected? If not and in the context of your previous posts, where have you been when Greece, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Ireland had their sovereignty taken away by institutions backed by the non-iron curtain powerful states ?

All I want in this situation is for Ukraine to hold free and fair elections and elect a new government. At the moment the main stumbling block for this to happen are the pro-Russian supporters in the east. If the previous regime in Kiev had respected the will of his electorate in the first place then then none of this.

People shouldn't be afraid of their government, governments should be afraid of their people.

Uh huh. Talk to my mrs and her family. They're Polish and remember well what it was like under communist rule. No food in the shops, electricity blackouts that lasted weeks or months, rationing of meat, milk, eggs etc.

Sounds joyful.

that happened during the 1979 and 1982 crisis, you do remember power outages in the UK in the 70's, dont you (assumming you were old enough back then or even alive).

i also wrote, "some others disagree".

Well, when I walk past advertisement posters here which say "1 in 4 children today faces starvation"

I thought this was about some Africa poster, but nope... Good old America.

This is 2014 mind you in the richest country in the world....

A country where not long ago Hospitals could refuse treatment of you unless you had means to pay, still is allowed in some States (probably southern).

What I am trying to say, I could paint you a picture of 2014 USA that would look a lot worse than 1980 under Iron Curtain, I can show you pictures of families sleeping in downtown on "Rolex" and "Cartier" porches, begging for food.

In the very least, in Soviet Union chances of you being left on street, hungry, without medical treatment were a lot less in 1970 than in 2014 USA.

You talk about Iron Curtain, but ask how many Americans actually have a Passport or left USA :D

I am not saying that Soviet Union was a good place to live, it definitely wasn't... But you have to accept some of its benefits and cant just say it was all bad and its sooo much better in the west now.

I was 4 and 7 respectively so don't remember. However things were much better here than in Poland. Pretty sure of that.

I certainly don't like what's going on in 2014 USA but I'd still much prefer to live there than 2014 Russia.

Did you even read the 2 nd line?

Yes, I did and then I looked at the distance between Ukraine and Russia and the UK and Russia and saw that really there were near as damn it here and will continue to await to see what develops rather than get all sensationalistic about something that is done on a regular basis. I suspect significant numbers on this forum secretly wants a war so they can get their warporn fix. I'd rather not buy into the **** just yet thanks.
