Got My New Audi A6

Yeah I still need to read the manual... guess it will be some bed time reading.

On another forum someone mentioned that when parking the wing mirrors dip automatically. I don't think mine do though.

Make sure the little mirror selector knob is set to the middle setting for heated mirrors or left/right to dip the mirror to reverse. It can be done through VCDS if you don't have it already.

I have read about VCDS modifications but am unclear on how one would do it. Someone mentioned the site Ross-Tech but the adaptors/software seem really expensive.

You need a cable. Have a look on audi forums. Not sure where your based, I know a few who have the cable required around the UK.

Basically its a 300 odd quid cable that you plug into the port underneath the steering wheel/dashboard. For example, I can pay someone in Krispy Kremes. :D

I'm based in Uxbridge/Kingston/Bromley. I found a few users on vwaudi forums, so have messaged them

£300? jesus!

I dunno if you can use the old VAG-COM software that you might find a copy of laying around in a drawer or something, but that works with a cable for a tenner off eBay. I bought one, I coded stuff on my C5 S6 with it no bother.

The new versions of VCDS are programmed to overwrite the chip in the cheap cables that don't come from rosstech (IIRC) so maybe for the very newest cars you'd need to buy the full-price item. If you're the sort to DIY things and look at fault codes and stuff, it is probably worth the investment. If not, I'd just find a forumer or pay the dealer to do it.

It is different to vagcom but same sort of idea. Not sure if it is exactly the same cable. There is also the secret "green" menu, which has some features you can enable that can change the way the mmi looks/options etc.

Stop posting that car :p
You mind me asking what you paid for it?

Nothing as its not his :p
Bingo! :p

Probably shouldn't say the exact number as it wasn't my cash. The list on it new was £53K with the options (spec here), and with 18,000 miles on it I got it for more than £23K off that. Got the salesman to give it a new pair of tyres (as I looked up how much they cost in 20s!) and the latest MMI software and Map Database updates.

Yeah I love the wheels and the shape but it's FWD with no used petrol ones available. I also prefer the interior of the BMW 5.
Quattro > *.

If you wait your while you can find a petrol, but they're few and far between. It took a fair bit of searching and waiting until I found that one for my father. But it was worth it. The 3.0TFSI from the S4/S5 mated to the new S-Tronic gearbox is absolute amazeballs . I looked up online and there were only 60something registered with the 3.0TFSI :(. Shame as the supercharged V6 is fantastic. 300BHP as standard, and according to APR/MRC a smaller pulley on the supercharger along with a remap will have you on the other side of 400BHP.
Hence why my Clio 182 is just sat on the drive unused for the past few weeks - father is working out of the country and it would be a shame to see the A6 go to waste ;).
It's noticeable when pulling away from stationary.
Also BMW's feel significantly less front end heavy, which improves driving dynamics.
Quattro obviously gives no problems for pulling away .
I'd say the driving dynamics of it are fine for a big barge... but comparing it like with the 5 series barge we had (E61 LCI M-Sport Diesel) I'd say the BMW probably handled a bit better TBH.

Yeah, I don't really get it though. Sometimes it will forget to bring the mirrors back up when you shift to drive. And it's a right pain moving the knob from centre for the heating/folding over to the left for dipping and then remembering to move it back. Why can't it do the dip with the knob still in the central heating/folding position?

Ross-Tech is who makes the cables and software.
VCDS is the software (new version of Vag Com). The cable you need for the C7 is the HEX+CAN USB. I got mine from www.gendan.co.uk who are an official reseller of the Ross-Tech cables.

I did the first VCDS mod to ours at the weekend - told it to use the All-Weather lights as cornering lights.
As you might have noticed already, the S-Lines with Xenon headlights don't have traditional foglights. They're integrated into the headlamp units as an extra bulb, and Audi have renamed them from Fog to All Weather. By enabling it in VCDS, it now turns the left or right 'all weather' light on when you're doing tight corners.
Whilst in VCDS I had a check for any logged error messages (none) and checked what the launch control activations counter was on (zero).

I am sure there is a setting in VCDS to enable dipping as long as you already have it/parking sensors or something.

@Westyfield, tbh never had to use fog lights on my car since I got it. Xenons I imagine are way brighter and effective. Obviously rear fog light is handy.

You have to turn the lighting dial to full headlights then pull it out towards you.

The manual explained how to do it but it didn't work. I'm arranging to meet a guy tomorrow to apply some VCDS changes for me

so exactly what can you do with this VCDS?

These are the ones I plan to set:

Code:
Enabling Gauge Test/Needle Sweep
This will sweep the needles of the speedo and rev counter through their full range automatically when you start the engine.
[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
[Coding - 07]
[Long Coding Helper]
Click on byte 1 and you'll see the selectable option: "Gauge Test/Needle Sweep active"
Check this option
[Do It!]

Kerb lighting
Illuminating the kerb when turning hard left or right at low speeds with dipped beam on, by turning on the all-weather light on the relevant side of the car.
[Select]
[09-Cent. Elect.]
[Coding - 07]
[Long Coding Helper]
Click on byte 4 and enable bit 0
[Do It!]

Enable auto handbrake when shift into P
[Select]
[53 - Parking Brake]
[Security Access - 16]
Code displayed to me was - 78713
[Adaption - 10]
[Select]
"Shift P to EPB"
Set to Activated
[Do It!]

Passenger door mirror dip on selecting reverse.
When reverse gear is selected, the passenger door mirror dips to show the kerb if the mirror control knob is set to the passenger door mirror position. When driving forwards and exceeding 5mph or when switching off the car, the passenger mirror returns to its original position. If the position of the mirror is changed when dipped, this change is remembered the next time the mirror dips.
[Select]
[52 - Door Elect, Pass]
[Coding - 07]
[Long Coding Helper]
Click on Byte 4 (5th one along from the left)
Set Bit 2 to "on"
[Do It!]

Auto Release Brake without Seatbelt On **
This will allow you to move your car and have the brake release without your seatbelt on.
[53 - Parking Brake]
[Security Access - 16] (Enter code presented by program)
[Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 7 change 1 to 0

Enable Automatic Gear selection shown in DIS
[02 – Auto Trans] [Adaptation – 10]
Select “Single Gear Display” from top channel drop down menu
Select “D on/S on” from New value drop down menu

Enable Hidden menu in MMI
[5F - Information Electr.]
[Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 6
change 0 to 1
Use this hidden menu at your own risk.

Bit 2 – (Rear) Uncheck the box or change :Bit 2 to 0

Sorry to be a pain guys, but how do I fold the mirrors? I don't have power mirrors so I tried twisting them closed but they didn't budge. I got too scared to try any more, lol.

You just push them in (horizontal force) and they swing in upwards.

They are a little stiff.

Are you paying to get the vcd stuff done?

Thanks. Managed to fold them. Was just a little worried about breaking them :o

The guy I am meeting tomorrow said he would charge me £10, which seems fair to me as it will take about an hour or so.

I tried enabling that last week but it didn't seem to make any difference . Will be intrigued to see if it works for you.

Will let you know tomorrow evening as I am getting it done at 5pm :)

so exactly what can you do with this VCDS?

Depends on the car and it's spec but you can mess around with quite a lot, as well as the stuff Danger Phoenix already listed, on cars with Air Suspension like my A8 you can use it to lower/raise the car to a ride height other than the 4 preset ones, so if you want to lower it further than the 'Dynamic' preset then you can, although you have to remember that the car will still lower itself a further 5mm after 30 seconds at motorway speed. Some big stuff like that you have to be careful with but the smaller stuff like Mirrors dipping, Headlight functions, other Exterior light functions, Hidden MMI Menu, Needle Sweep at start up, what the lock and unlock buttons on the key do if held down and many more you can mess around with as much as you like.
