Failed MOT need help and advice

Why not take it to an independent and let them price up the work?

The exhaust probably needs replacing at the flexi-pipe. The rear sounds like it needs new rubber mounts.

The brake issues should hopefully be connected, ie worn rear disks and pads causing excessive hand brake travel and an in balance. Rear brakes are generally about half the cost of fronts.

If they are anti roll bar drop links they are cheap and very easy to fit. If they use OEM parts it shouldn't be frighteningly expensive. All depends on the exhaust which is bound to be the most expensive part.

Probably only looking at 2-3 hours labour for the lot. Brakes parts about £80-£100. Might be worth calling cowboy fit or something for a quote on an exhaust.

Thanks for the people who actually had some info and input that was useful...I really appreciate it.

Fact is I was quoted £850 for the Front flexi pipe itself and considering the car is worth around £1500 I was weighing up my options.

I have been advised to buy the parts myself and pay a garage to fit them.

Anyway I have got some BMW experts on the case and they have sorted me out in a helpful and supportive manner taking into consideration that I know very little about cars.

They share the rear drum brake assembly with the Rover 75, and they're just as useless on those. :p
Usually new shoes and discs (drum is inside the disc) sorts it out... for now :p

I would buy the parts and take it to an independent garage to get them fitted. As for the exhaust I would just get it bodged or welded until you can afford to replace it. It would be a shame to scrap the car.

Where did you get the MOT done?

Council....the exhaust part in question is the first one of the links I posted for 117 inc vat

Why didn't you mention that in your first post? Because the failures points are all relatively cheap repairs and you didn't bother to mention you'd had a ridiculous quote it's hardly surprising people have questioned why on earth you'd consider scrapping it.

If the handbrake is seized it's not a cheap repair...

Erm neither is it open heart surgery. It's a very common issue and is hardly complex or expensive.

Depending on what needs doing....saying something is not expensive or complex when the issue has not been diagnosed properly is meaningless.

What are you on about? The "whole assembly" is two brake shoes a spring, actuator and a ratchet - none of the bits that actually do any moving will be broken, even if they were they're dirt cheap

I've already explained how the backing plate can be repaired too

Great news then I have nothing to worry about...it goes into the garage or an inspection on Monday...will report back:)

How much labour cost will swirl flap removal be?

So why were you making totally random statements then? I'm happy to try and help you out/explain things (as I'm sure others are) but come on!

Swirl flaps not sure, few hours I'd guess - say £150-200. Plenty of people have had it done though should be easy to check

Just what the garage said dude....chill ya beans kiddo;) cheers for the input tho appreciated .:)

I took the car to the indy with a print out of all the parts from euro car parts.

The total for the parts was £297 inc vat...The indy said he had an account with them so he would get me the parts at that price to save me ordering them and he would charge for labour. So I am well pleased.

The handbrake was a non issue just needed some new shoes..The bracket for the exhaust was a welding job at 30 quid. So because of the sale on at euro parts and the money saved I asked the garage to remove the swirl flaps too.

After some thought I have decided to freshen up the car.It drives well so will keep it for a bit. I have booked the wheels for an acid dip and powder coating on the 14th may and have two new wings going on.

Just need to order the BMW centre caps...two new number plates and a new Bonnet badge.
