Teacher stabbed to death at Leeds high school

So is taking drugs.
Problem is, drugs are addictive like gaming, it may start off as a 'choice' but it can easily become an addiction, with certain personality types.

Guess what happens when you spend a great deal of your time playing games, getting drunk, taking drugs, gambling? (Apply any 'addiction' here)

The wheels fall off your life, relationships suffer, fitness suffers, happiness suffers, work suffers.

Simply put, games themselves aren't bad, it's the addiction to that's the problem.

Nonsense, I cannot possibly agree. Addiction a choice, if you really want to give up something, or maintain control, you can. So again I say its wholly a personal choice in allowing a detrimental effect on your life.

Yes, you can regain control, but do you WANT to?

Please don't tell me that gaming is in any way beneficial to the human body or mind?

Other than as I have previously mentioned, a distraction from life.

I would argue, depending on the genre of game, that it can encourage development and awareness to name a couple of things; especially when you are forced to think and problem solve; so no, they're not simply a distraction.

And reload saved games, and Google to find the solution etc.

Games are not that challenging to the mind, try doing a sport instead.

Gaming is a distraction, a means of entertainment.

Esports may be a bit more involved however.

I certainly wont be listing my gaming achievements on my epitaph that's for sure.

Haha, well of course not, but to most its simply a hobby and enjoyment. It's certainly genre specific but I love games with a bit of problem solving that require a bit of thinking.

I play 2 sports and I'm a dab hand at chess too!

It grinds my gears how the media keep trying to blame these kinds of incidents on games. I mean really, why try and hide the multitude of other factors that could have (probably have) caused this, and all the others? Poor parenting, education, mental illness (?), the list goes on.

Stop taking the easy option and blaming games, ffs.
You have to remember that corporate media doesn't publish "news", it publishes propaganda to swing the public into favour of things like wars and regulation.
There never used to be age restrictions on games until the media started blaming them for attacks and killings. The BBC is the worst of them all.

If you want news, then you need to read from an independent, not-for-profit publisher.

Why does a past-time have to be beneficial to body or mind?

To be honest I'd argue that any activity that allows a person some downtime to unwind, following potentially stressful activities including work and school, is actually beneficial to that persons emotional wellbeing.

BS. Games can be extremely challenging, sometimes more so than sports and they have proven benefits, both physical and intellectual. And yes, gaming for 12hours a day is not healthy but neither is, in example, jogging for 12 hours a day.

Sports are just as much entertainment as any other game.

Games are bad, well the addiction to games is bad.

Games are like any other distraction in life, they should be just that, a distraction and nothing more.

People get addicted, mis-meals, go without sleep, ignore friends and family.

Wonder how I know this?

Games ARE unhealthy - unless you have loads of will power and know when to put it down and walk away.

Also, they do absolutely nothing at all for your concentration levels, I suspect that they greatly contribute to ADHD.

My point is that you can't blame the games/games industry. Blame the people who let themselves become addicted. They need help.

Not sure if srs...

The problem with the whole games debate is both sides miss the obvious: that not everyone will behave the same way. Now we can actually demonstrate that games (especially difficult ones) increase aggression levels and the development in the brain. However, we can also show increased learning, socialisation and the associated development in the brain that will compensate usually overly so. Now that is of course presuming said brain is capable of behaving 'normally' when it comes to dealing with such things and more importantly socialisation. Therefore, if one were to have your archetype savante loner then it could be well argued that gaming may well be a very harmful triggers factor along with a whole load of other things. The issue not really being the games of course but the lack of support and help such people can get.

Do you honestly believe this?

We live in a "centrist society" where the two major strands of politics are centre left and centre right. The fact both sides of mainstream media share a similar narrative is not due to conspiracy, corruption or similar; it's because they reflect the fact our national life exists within a very narrow spectrum.

PS - It's called a 'pastime' because it is an activity which passes time. It does not need to productive or useful, in fact it's not really a pastime if it's too productive.
