I still don't understand what you people are complaining about. You want an authority to force companies what to sell? If we have a problem here, what is the solution?

Businesses are profit-centric and any way to reduce costs must be considered. Battery eggs sold as free range, horse as beef, halal as non-halal, and non-halal as halal. I am convinced it all happens.

Such places are spot-checked but nobody watches them full-time. I imagine they are squeaky clean when the food standards people are visiting but default to highest profit practises when they leave.

The problem lies with supermarkets and mass production. As i stated earlier I would be more concerned with non UK meat products as we have the highest standards in the world. Unfortunately the **** that gets imported does not have to adhere to the same rules/standards.

If that is a 5% increase in sales with the change that they are making it is a big difference when you factor in the number of stores that will serve Halal only and don't forget that not only Muslims will be going into these Subway stores they'll have non-Muslims too.

No. It's about animal welfare and the intrusion of religious superstitious nonsense into UK society. Muslims are easily able to source Halal food in the UK without the need to start changing Western retail outlets to pander to their religion. If they want Halal fast food in the UK I'm fine with that, but make sure it's clearly printed on the store front sign so that the rest of us can chose not to spend our money there.

Subway said customers can identify those stores selling halal food by the special 'All meats are Halal' sign, which must be displayed in participating branches.

Islam has been within UK history for centuries, so nothing has changed at all. We're just becoming more civilised and allowing people to practice their rights of freedom of religion. Businesses are seeing an opportunity and catering for it - there was a gap in the market and they're filling it - why not?

Farming standards are still not as good as they can be, and we cannot also control how some meats that come in from abroad are butchered. Besides, as has been discussed many more UK Halal abattoirs are now stunning the animal which was deemed acceptable in Islamic law as a way of preparing Halal food.

Lots of shops and butchers now have signs stating they sell Halal food - as does a lot of packaging. In fact near me there are Halal and non Halal butchers should you be that worried about how your meat was killed. So it's already a normal part of the process.

It's a lot more pleasant to share this earth with people than it is to exclude them - this is just a way of including more people in society rather than excluding them.

Yeah, because where will it end? Next thing you know, the UK will have a state church with a monarch as its head! It's hard to imagine a more shocking intrusion of religious superstitious nonsense into UK society than that.

Well done. You've compared apples to oranges. Congrats on the fallacy. The Church Of England for all it's faults, and it has many, is very benign regarding it's impact on UK society when compared to even moderate Islam.

It's fair to say that most people in the UK are not seriously religious. We are quite a secular nation. So I find it annoying when ANY religion tries to impose it's self in ANY way on our society.
