Time for a laugh - First Car £12k+ - Age 28 - Coupe

Thanks for the over night replies. Unfortunately still not liking hatchbacks, definately not 4x4's and the VX220 looks great but not best choice for first car.

Regards the other 2 posts, actually I have pretty good idea of what I wanted when I came into this thread as in my OP and here i'm still considering the same car plus one or two other options. However, it would be a very poor financial investment to grab a Ford Fiesta at this opportunity. First car or not.

Is the fact that I simply want a nice car with a bit of power as I have more money to spend than most and am 10 years over the driving age really that bad? I can think of worse threads on here for people asking for much more.

very poor financial investment
Its a brand new car/Nealy new, I don't think there is a worse financial investment possible other than Facebook shears.

Get the 120i. at least it will be easy to sell at the end.

If you want a good financial investment don't spend 12k on some 4-6 year old BMW spend 6k on something like a Mazda RX8 40th Anniversary (6k 27k mile on the clock) and put the rest of the ££££ in an isa or something.

I'll get shot down fir this but....

In my eyes spending twelve thousand pounds upwards on your first car is a bit daft.

Why not bank the money, get something for a fraction of the price for 1/2 years.

Please read the thread :(

Will be focusing on the 120i. And I meant buying a cheap run around as suggested is bad financially. Considering most say don't spend 12k on a first car i'm not gonna spend 12k on a first car I don't even like am I? lol

Thought we'd got past the basics of the thread yesterday.

How is buying a cheap run around bad financially (1-3k car) over spending 12k on a Nealy new one.?

You even put in your OP that you got a quote for insurance for a fiesta.
Why does that fiesta have to cost 12k? why not 5k

There are some nice cars out there for well less than 12k

Considering most don't spend 12k on there car

7.59 years old is the average age of a car in the uk and looking on auto trader that's looking in the 2-5k range on average. so your looking for a first car that's more than 2x the national average.

You can have anything you like, pay 100k and get a custom range rover but most people make do with less, and you can still find nice cars without braking the bank.

So if you could buy a car for 5k or 12k and savings you make will not come to you and said car needs to last 5 years and at the end the resale value will make up the majority of the next car purchase. You would go for a 5k car simply as you dont need to spend 12k? Wouldnt be the smartest move in my book but i'm weird like that and have decided if the money is available and I would enjoy a 'nicer' car why the hell not. Im not after the fastest thing on 4 wheels.

This hole Topic is null and void, it seems you had all ready the 120 in your head from the start.

Just go out and buy it, Do you really need people from the internet to justify it for you before your willing to get something?

To be fair the whole £12k situation is a bit weird. I guess it depends where the money is coming from.
OP, I'm guessing it's not your savings? And not your partner's either?
Presumably a gift from family for a first car, that's the only thing I can think of.

That being the case, and that it sounds like you could spend part of the money on a warranty, you should join the Jag club with an XK of some description ;)
Alternatively a 1 series is fine but will depreciate more whereas the XK will be fairly static in price comparatively, so probably cheaper overall.

I would be looking for cars that have done their depreciation/hold their value well in this situation I think.

Not going into finer detail but death of parent. Family home being sold I will get a place and car. Money was going to be tight and remaining elderley family insist on adding and 12k to get a 'nice' car so im not struggling finding a place. Have argued it and lost so the money is there but it is also not for me to keep if I dont spend it. So i'll spend it.

Or even a 130i?
I appreciate it is 1. A hatchback, and 2. Maybe a bit too powerful for a first car. However when I was looking at the 125i a few months back I found I could get a similar age and mileage 130i which is more powerful with more toys for less money.

+1

Some of the picks are daft. I am an active car enthusiast who owns a rwd track car and stuff but even now I would not be picking things like Z4’s and GT86 and the like as my daily driver …. There pretty driver focused cars your all suggesting this new driver to get as his 1st car. That is going to 90% of the time take him 4 mile to work and back. i still like my smart fortwo coupé idea tbh and if i did not already have the passat i would deffo be looking at them 99 a month deals they have on for nipping to work and stuff.

Are you kidding? A Z4 or Toyota GT86 are great commuter cars. I'm unsure about what you class as a track car, but simply being sporty and/or rear wheel drive doesn't mean it will throw you into the nearest hedge backwards if not driven by Lewis Hamilton.

If he said for instance: Lotus Exige S, Noble M15, TVR <anything> then you'd have a point, but the Z4s and GT86s are mostly tame and refined vehicles which are more than suitable for everyday commutes.

Not sure I agree on that, for a small convertible its quite refined and definitely tolerable for a commute.

Obviously its nothing like as quiet as the larger cars with a real roof but its pretty good for what it is

I've used a Z4 for both distances and commuting - if it's raining and you just want to get to work it's a fairly irritating car, it's noisy inside, the interior isn't fantastic, it has no real refinement, etc etc.

If the roof is off, it totally transforms it into a fantastic thing to drive.

In normal weather I find my Z4 fine for normal driving no matter the distance (drove to Ireland last year and Liverpool a few weeks back). Yes it wont be as nice as a car with a real roof from any half decent companies but its far better then either of my Ibiza's were. Its when it is windy and raining it can get very noisy, but music helps with that :P

But as fox says its with the roof down it becomes an amazing thing to drive and any opportunity to do so the roof is down.

If you have a Z4 and it isn't raining, and you are not on a Motorway drive, not having the roof down should be a non-endorsable fixed penalty offence. There is simply no reason not to.

The roof on a Z4 is an umbrella to stop you getting wet. You don't walk around on a dry day with an umbrella up so for the same reason you don't drive around in a Z4 with the roof up :p

Oh, if its above freezing, not raining and I am not going to be on a motoway for more then a few hours the roof is down, did half the trip back from Liverpool with it down :D

I got a car which can not have a roof I am sure as hell going to use that feature :P

Also I never use an umbrella.......
