MSI Z77 caught On Fire - What can I do?

If I was getting big sparks on a motherboard I would be inclined to think the PSU has broken down and mains is getting onto the motherboard, in which case everything will be toast.

Was it actual jumping sparks or localised arcing (very bright and sizzling but staying in one place)?, Low voltage high current over a very short gap could cause that.

Could do with more details about your system and maybe some images of the area damaged.

Pictures would help with diagnosis of what has happened and whether it has damaged the CPU or RAM etc.

But tbh if I had noticed smoke and sparks I wouldn't be turning it back on once it was off without pulling it apart and finding out what was wrong in the first place.

There are PSU testers you know :p

Some years ago I made the mistake of purchasing a PSU from a well known high street electronics chain.

After a couple of months the PC started to cut out randomly, eventually with a pop (Which confirmed to me that it was the PSU and not something else), so I took it back to the shop. (Fortunately it hadn't damaged anything else)

The sales guy insisted that he "Test" it before giving me a refund.

The PSU tester was duly connected and the PSU switched on!

There was a bight flash, a very load bang, and all the lights went out!:D

We looked at each other for a moment in the gloom and then he said, "Yep, that's faulty!"

Sounds like it is more of a PSU fault here. Without information and pictures everyone is just guessing.

Always do the smell test first :p

So what PSU was it? I'm not buying that the mobo suddenly exploded by the NB without something else causing it to do so be it an ill fitted component or, most likely, a dodgy PSU which is the most common cause of these kinds of faults.
