Is it acceptable to be on your mobile while at a check out in a supermarket.

I don't work.

I'm HFA so hate conversation anyway, it is incredibly awkward feeling for me even at the best of times so forced conversation at a checkout is bad for my anxiety.

Self service when possible please!
Sometimes I actively avoid shops without self service :|

Student or disability benefits ?

EXACTLY, you made my point.

No, I contradicted it. You are conflating the jobs and the people doing them. The person you replied to did not.

Like I said, any more jobs he wants to have a go at and demean the people who do them?

You're conflating the jobs and the people doing them. That's your position, not the position of the person you're replying to. He referred to the job as being scummy. You're arguing that the person and the job are the same. He didn't. So you're essentially arguing with yourself.

Wut?
So what jobs do these people do?

The jobs are not the people. They're not the same thing. You referred to the people doing the jobs as being the jobs. That is wrong. The jobs are the jobs. The people doing the jobs are the people doing the jobs. The people are not the jobs.

This basically. Used to work on tills. Really great feeling to not even be acknowledged by rude ignorant customers nattering away on their phones...

always make an effort to speak to every cashier to ever deal with or are you guilty of this too?

Always spend the time to be courteous to anyone giving you a service. I wouldn't go as far as small talk unless they start it with me but I'm more than happy to chew the fat.

Maybe its just me but I feel a bit embarrassed about publicly chatting on a phone and try to hush it down cos I'm sure no one else wants to hear my crap.

At the end of the day, they are being paid to do a job and in return they get money, anything else should be a bonus not a requirement.

Just because someone is offended it doesn't necessarily mean you are being rude. Some people are sensitive and others are insensitive. Draw your own line between the two and act accordingly. Do we all really want to act the same ?

Personally I'll only talk on the phone when out if it's genuinely important (don't really enjoy phone conversations) - if it is important I won't be hanging up when I get to the till but I will give a smile & nod while on the phone.

If my moby rings when I am interacting with Anybody I just answer say "I'll call you back in a mo" hang up & carry on. I will not ignore a call just as I wouldn't ignore somebody who is serving me.
I am a sociable chap though & chat to everybody, Everybody knows me in all the shops I use & those that don't do before I've left. :p

Definitely rude OP. It's your prerogative to be so, of course, but undeniably rude, nonetheless.

Nice to see you get pulled up on it, actually. I always find the Aldi staff show a little more personality than their big-4 counterparts.

I'm not stuck up my own **** and am able to realise that checkout operators are people too, so I wouldn't dream of being on my phone whilst going through the checkout.

If you're asking how is it different to having a conversation with someone stood next to you? well:

a) the person stood next to you will be able to see/hear when you're interacting with the person at the till and not talk to you at that particular moment, unlike someone who's not there.

b) if you're in the middle of a conversation with someone stood next to you and ignore the checkout operator because of it, then it's just as rude...

Yup.

Arknor, your assburgers is showing.

Ahhhh, reminds me of a South Park episode :D

Anyhoo, yeah I think it is a little rude and I do not do it myself.

I wonder, though, if the OP would complain if the check out assistant was on their own phone chatting away whilst bleeping those goods through the scanner?

By the logic of the arguments presented in this thread, if it does not impede their ability to do their job, and it is not holding you up - it is not a problem? Right?

Happens to me all the time in the local Spar. We chat if it isn't busy and are quick but polite if it is busy. If they are on the phone I'll try and help by not intruding and just buying my items. It takes very little effort on my part to not judge them instead of being offended.

My point was to highlight the general hypocrisy that a lot of people apply to this situation.

Talking on their own phone as a customer is perfectly acceptable to some, but if the boot is on the other foot they are usually the ones complaining about rude staff being on their phone whilst serving customers.

See what I mean?

Not quite the same, being on the phone as a member of staff is while serving is different to being out of work.

yea.......
someone is getting paid to SERVE
Someone else is being served as a customer.

If you want to be on the phone whilst at work then go work in a call centre
