The days of Empire died a long time ago. We're just a small island off the coast of Europe. We shouldn't be wasting valuable money trying punch above our weight on the world stage. Our nuclear weapons program costs the tax payer billions. Personally, I'd rather see that money spent on the NHS, education, welfare and other areas of the economy.

We're the same Island we've always been. It's not as if it's shrunk since the days of old.

The world has changed and so has our part in it, that's clear. However it's still important (to me at least) that the UK maintains it's ability to project power across the world when needed. Whether it be to assist allies, to protect our interests or protect ourselves.

Nuclear capability plays a big part in this and is absolutely necessary to maintain the balance of power.

Australia, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Japan, all of these countries have a higher standard of living than we do and none of them waste valuable money on a nuclear weapons program. Also, nobody is threatening any of these countries. They don't waste billions on wars. They just get on with being who they are and reap the benefits. I'd happily live in any of these countries over the UK if I could. The Americans spend more on defence than the next 10 nations combined. I say let them police the world. It's NOT little Britain's job.

If you're not the US, the EU or China, you're not a global player, that's what I'm saying.

Brazil and India are currently developing their positions as would powers. They have the population, they're getting the wealth, it just takes a time to spread the influence.

They are most certainly world players.

You obviously don't understand the concept of world players - there can't be a dozen of them.

Canada, Norway and Denmark are members of NATO.

Denmark, Sweden and Finland are members of the EU.

Japan is currently being bullied by China (nuclear power)

Australia is a barren wilderness filled with the majority of the planets deadly things, nuclear weapons would have no noticeable impact on it :P

Oh and let's not forget that Finland also still has kudos for beating up the USSR :P
