Vegetarianism: what if we didn't eat meat

1. If we did not eat meat, the vast majority of these animals would never have experienced the gift of life in the first place. i.e. they would have been deprived of the opportunity. Are the vegetarians saying they would have preferred that the (eaten) animal would have been better off by having no life in the first place?

Depends if the animal is slaughtered the proper way or the Halal way. :)

I agree that we shouldn't eat meat its terrible that we keep animals in captivity just to kill them for food. They are just as conscious as any other animal so why treat them any different than dogs or cats.

Its there though nothing going to stop the food machine now. Plus if everyone stopped consuming meats it would have to be a gradual process or it would call imbalances in production and potentially mass starvation, until the production of non meat based food can keep up with the now new demand. The farms would have to change from meat to grains or other farming and may not have the expertise.

It is not going anywhere though so i am still going to eat meat. I've tired lots of different animals and I think we should eat more types of meats. I'd rather turn an animal in to live stock than have it go extinct, how ever i would still never eat certain animals, why I can't tell you exactly why i just could not do it because they seem too conscious. I guess i would still try it but i would hate to see certain animals turned in to live stock. I still think that we have the technology to keep livestock in a much more pleasant manner. Its just these big agribusiness don't see the animals in that way and rather make billions in profit per year. It wouldn't take much to improve the lives of some of the livestock. British farming for example sheep in wales, is still done in a very reasonable way and the sheep live a happy life and if they were not livestock they may already be extinct because they are not that great at defending themselves. Well you could argue that the animals lost their defensive instincts as a result of being turned in to livestock, but they were not predators by any stretch.

If everyone stopped eating meat:

1) People would need a lot more veggy stuff. This means more land needed which also means less room for animals. Animal numbers reduce all while people feel smug that they aren't harming animals.

2) People need more veggy again.... we kill other animals to stop them grazing/stealing 'our' food when we robbed them of their habitat.

3) World hunger increases.

4) In the future with oil running out, more land taken up with fuel crops = less area for food, food is more expensive and more scarce.

5) People start killing and eating each other when prices get too high and food is scarce for those that are poor, realise they enjoy meat... mutations occur and the zombie apocalypse begins...

i did half a shift in a meat packing factory a while back ,ive now joined my other half as a quorn eater although i was 85 percent there anyway but that blood and guts slop house (that supplies the major supermarkets) made my mind up
i just talk to cows now not eat them

I think the OP's GF is right. We are intelligent enough to not eat meat now. We're not cavemen any more.

Problem is, it's bloody tasty for a lot of people:p

I'm proud to be vegetarian but I can't stand the high horse (usually vegan) crew.

I don't have to, no. I choose to after the more extreme activities I do.

Have you looked into B12 deficiency in any detail? It can occur gradually over a period as long as a few years after switching from an omnivorous diet to a vegan diet (existing stocks of B12 are reused very efficiently). Due to the gradual deterioration, you can quite easily get the stage of permanent irreversible damage before being forced to acknowledge the problem. It's impossible for humans to get B12 naturally from plants. You can get vegan B12 - it's a waste product of some bacteria so it can be grown in a lab/factory. It's added to a lot of vegetarian products, but it's not naturally occuring in any of them. You get it from eating animals (or animal products, i.e. eggs and dairy) or you get it from supplements or you deteriorate slowly and nastily (and die if you keep on without it). You can also get it from faeces, but that's a rather unappealing option.

Well pardon me all over the place ! How rude of me to point out an error. From now on I'll just tell everyone what a great guy you are.

You didn't point out an error. You falsely claimed that he'd written something he didn't write. That is not at all polite.
