bottom line is, its still the same gpu...its slower than the gpu in the ps4. No amount of tweaking will ever fix that

as the generation moves on the performance will be honed on both machines...but the starting point for the ps4 is better and faster..therefore there will always be a discrepancy will always be there

only making it cheaper will entice the number of buyers

if it was cheap enough and it had games that were interesting exclusives..then I would buy one

but even if I had both machines..the multi platform games are going to be a higher resolution (whatever that may be 900p, 1080p etc) and a better frame rate on the ps4 so why get them on the xbox one. Only its exclusive games will bring the buyers.

As it stands..the gamers are buying the superior hardware hoping the games will come.

Yeah I can imagine if they do recompense older customers it will be with download able games etc.

As for price this Kinect less sku is no way going to be 350quid in shops! More like 300 or have some free games.
MS have already said early adopters wont be compensated because Kinect is now removed
I saw a few tweets from people saying they could use the freed up power for games but that's simply not possible. It would mean that developers would have to provide 2 differently speced versions of every game. 1 for a Kinect-ed X1 and 1 for a Kinect-less X1. That's never going to happen.
Yeah its quite a conundrum, why would a developer make a game that 'Better with Kinect' now when the upshot is theyll lose upto 10% of resources. Wonder what will happen to already released games?

Thats not "as" true this time, at least for the PS4, they are basically PC machines, especially the PS4 as its more straight forward, so any big leap over time isn't going to be anything like we got on the PS3/ 360 as they used very different architecture for them, which took devs longer to work with.

PS4 will always be more powerful, but you arnt going to see a huge change, the difference in the XO is what the new dev kits mean to working with the ESRAM.

Some comments on that Eurogamer article saying games could possibly disable Kinect to use the extra power, but then what would be the point in owning Kinect in the first place?
Whereas the removal of it and price drop is good for people wanting to buy an X1, it's a kick in the teeth for people that have already bought one.
I don't support this whole "that's the risk you take for being an early adopter" either. This is more than just a price drop. MS are essentially saying that the peripheral they MADE people buy because it was "essential" to their vision of the X1 could now become completely redundant.

They didn't MAKE me buy anything, I knew exactly what it was and why I was buying.....they didn't come round my house and force me to place an order.

Im still very happy to have it with it.

Its like saying Sony forced you to buy a machine with a light bar that does nothing for games unless you buy a VR head unit.

if only this guy had been in charge from the start...the 50 quid they could have saved on each boxed device by not forcing kinect on people could have been used to beef up the hardware

what a wasted opportunity

my worry would be they up the specs mid life of the console to at least get parity with the ps4..now that would really annoy people!

I dno, which is why I said its not well-written as it implies a number of things - the source Polygon article isnt much help either.

Honestly it would have been better for MS not to have said anything about this and worked it out for June and then released a statement, going down the PR path they keep continuing to go down just leads to additional confusion.

Maybe sales were bad last month so they took emergency action?

To be honest, I think it's a good idea to decouple the Kinect and Console. If that was their big reveal (+ a price drop) for E3, then they have done that now and can concentrate more on features or exclusive games in June.

I still won't buy one, but I had always decided to only buy 1 console this gen. Even if it dropped to 300 (I think 325 is what they should have gone with). Still a lot of money for a second console + then games etc.

Well the entire management in nearly every line at MS has changed over the last yea, no head of Xbox and MS itself, perhaps they always thought it shouldnt have kinect bundled with it and are reverting to the road map they always wanted?

Sorry I just meant about the idea of removing the Kinect overhead could have been considered before making any statement about it so at least it was clear what people with/without Kinect can expect and how to enable such features.

Overall though I think for short term sales theyve gained with decoupling Kinect theyve really impacted the XOs long term 'success' - I think its a poor move considering the rhetoric only a year ago.

if they did that then not only would it become a minefield, i assume some loyal fans would be so mad they would honestly just move over to ps4 instead of being bent over yet again for an upgraded console.

MS have actually chopped all their arms and legs off in this race, contemplating an upgrade would be hilarious.

Their best bet is to see this out now and release a completely new console in November 2016 or 2017.

Kinect is officially dead now that they have dropped it, hopefully they learn from their mistakes, Sony certainly have.

Also £350 is laughable the PS4 is available for cheaper and is more powerful. It needs to be £275 at maximum, if they really wanted a bigger fanbase and to claw back some of the gap then ideally £250 for a kinect less XB1.

What is this gap they keep going on about....its not THAT much so early on, given the way they are both being sold.

Sony havnt learnt anything from their problems, they are still bleeding money quite badly in most departments.

It is a shame. I had some hopes for Kinect. Child of Eden showed what could be done. Infact, they could have spawned a whole genre based on that and I'd have lapped it up. A new Rez, Panzer Dragoon Orta, a new Magic carpet. Or what about a new take on arcade rail shooters - imagine a fantasy title similar to House of the Dead, but you're casting fireballs and ice shields with hand motions. It would have been epic. Right or wrong move aside, MS took all the risks and didn't give us any games that shows what kinect could do. And now it's doomed to being a tacked on option, or a crappy party game peripheral as no developer is going to risk putting decent resources behind a kinect based title.

MS launched only in their most important territories and promptly got hammered in them by a competitor trying to service many more countries.

Things are bad enough for them to press the panic button already, their private sales figures must make hard reading.

How has a thread about a Kinect-less Xbox (which a lot of people asked for) turned into yet another resolutiongate thread?

It's the only advantage the PS4 really has at the moment, therefore it's the only thing the usual suspects can keep regurgitating over and over again.

Anyone would think the Xbox One was displaying games in SD resolutions with the completely over-the-top amount of fuss people make about it.

Do you have numbers for that?.....last I heard XO was still a bit ahead in NA.

The only ones that need to worry right now out of all of them is Sony, like I said, they are in real financial diffs right now, they can sell all the PS4s they want right now, they aint clawing anywhere near close enough to manoeuvre on things like price and exclusives. Which doesnt bode well for what they can offer to the PS4 in the future.
