I can't work in an office for the next 50 years...

Reading this makes me want to travel. After degree I struggled to get decent job, 10 years ago started own business, paid for house, nice car e.t.c. But I would have loved to travel when younger. Now in late 30's I am able to travel and still run internet business.

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still able to travel and run a business at the sametime?!!? You have best of both world there.

supafly, you won't regret it. If you haven't done it before you may feel out of your comfort zone but just tell yourself. "if I really don't like I'll just fly home that day". Makes a difference

Also you have cash now so no need to stay in hostels, get some crappy bus etc

I wpuld love to have an office job. 6 years i have earned 100k per year but have blown it all in various places arounf the world and would love to settle down with a nice steady office job! do what makes you happy matey. you only live once

It's too late for my reply but meh.
I worked in an office, doing statistics for insurance. It was ludicrously dull. I gave up everything after three years and moved out to the UAE where i got a job, for no reason other than i did it as a hobby, in a photography studio. That was 5 years ago. Now im back in the UK about to graduate from University at 29 in Film Production, whilst working 3 or 4 times a month on high profile music videos.

Get out, the world is a big place. there's a lot to see.

Have you looked at working visas to places like Australia? Could get some bar work, travel around and you may even find a place you like.

Like you I realised I didn't want a typical office 9-5 job which is what I do now, I looked into joining the Armed Forces so I could learn a more hands-on skill and after a while of trying to choose which one I applied for the Army. I will hopefully will start in the next couple of months!

I would love to do something different than the current 9-5 office grind but have a long term gf and a mortgage, so it isn't really a realistic proposition.

I also have no idea what I would do.

I quite like my office job. Big company, medium sized IT office which has some very intelligent people. Opportunity depends really on yourself where I work. If you want to learn and show you are willing to, then people will spare time for you.

Suppose it depends what drives you. Personally I wouldn't mind getting my technical knowledge up to scratch then maybe moving somewhere sunny, working remotely and only going into the office as and when needed

A senior developer did this where I worked a few years ago

Whats with people in the UK and their obsession with traveling to Australia????

Everytime I mention Ive been traveling, I always get the question "oh, have you been to Australia??" I don't see the fascination with the country nor does it interest me going.

I like being in an office, per say. You know, the buzz and atmosphere. I'd get mind numb at home 100% of the time.

Funny you should say that, soon i'll be moving there for a year.
It will be a good character building thing do to, and its something I've wanted to do for years. The only downfall is that I hate spiders.

well, now I know someone who feels the same as I do. I would much prefer to see asian places and more exotic locales. Starting with japan and maybe see hawaii at least once. But australia, no thanks.

Traveled to Japan last year, loved the place. Highly recommend and not because of the tech side:)

For the majority, I'm guessing it's English being common that draws them to Oz/New Zealand/US/Canada.

Definitely.

I'd love to go travel parts of Asia, but on my own without knowing the language? It scares me a little.

For a holiday it would be fine, but for a working holiday - probably not.

Not yet, no. Although a couple of mentions of this have been made in the thread so will be looking into this as an option I think. :)

They're usually a year, then you have to return home. It may be a good idea to take a year out and see if that's what you really want.
