The main issue I have with 140mm rears is that there are slightly less options for changing out the brakes. I don't think it's as bad now as it was a couple of years ago though.

There shouldnt be any compatibility issues with different brakes?

You might have problems with frame clearance if you try to fit bigger rotors and some frames designed for 160 rotors wont take 140 rotors but the actual brakes will work with any setup.

im very tempted by this -;

http://www.probikekit.co.uk/bikes/raleigh-sp-elite-bike-black-700c/10947064.html - £560 with code

rip the groupo off, sell it for ~200

rip the wheels off.. sell them for 80ish quid

buy ultegra 6800 groupo

buy ~£200 wheelset

install

= ~1k bike with a nice frame?

Or get Planet X
https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBPXSLPULT6800/planet-x-pro-carbon-shimano-ultegra-6800-road-bike

Sell the wheelset and get something better if needed. Less effort, and comes with warranty, coming in at 7.9KG

that was the original plan! :) wheelset looks alright on PX so I might as well just kill it, can't see my self replacing it for another wheelset that weights ~1.6kg

I think I'll go with PX but the waiting is annoying! taking a day off on short notice will be tough.

Can't you just have it delivered to work and cycle it home?

I'm not keen on riding up the great north road though, is there a shared cycle path down the side all the way up like near the part that runs along side the moor?

Looks like the footpath alongside great north road is shared up to gosforth on streetview, where you can either take a left and head out the way I do, or continue through and I think there are bus lanes.

lol love the headlamp is it a dynamo? looks like it on the seat stay? or is that just another light?
It's a Dynohub front hub. The one at the back is a rear light, presumably a 50's or 60's addition judging by the googie rocket shape, but I've taken it off for now and only the front one is wired in.

Id buy 6800 + wheels, rip finishing kit off your current bike (saddle, pedals, bars) and buy a Canyon Ultimate AL SLX (comes with seatpost and stem) at the canyon 'race discount' rate for frameset only

that will tick over 1k - £1300 at least, 600 for frameset, 500 for group and 200 for wheels :o

Hmm. It's supposed to be thundery tonight. Probably not a good night to cycle to the exposed bare top of the highest hill for miles around. Maybe I'll save that for another day...

Wind is so deceiving, wen't out and I'm gliding along effortlessly, turn around and suddenly my legs are filled w/ lead and I'm dying at half the speed :p

Yup. I seemed to have only experienced the second parts of that today - despite half way through my cycle turning around essentially and going back the way I came.

I'm sure headwind defies physics somehow.
