As per title. Now this generation is well underway has anyone been tempted to go all digital or stick with physical media?

I'm leaning towards going all digital for a few reasons;

1: I downloaded a 50 gb game yesterday and it was very quick.
2: With PS Plus gone are the days of having all your collection in one place.
3: Physical releases today your lucky to even get a single sheet of paper with instructions inside.
4: Potential for Steam type sales ahead.
5: Convenience (No disc swapping, going to the shop)
6: Pre-Loading.

Obviously there are disadvantages as well;

1: Can't trade your games in if you don't like them.
2: In most cases they are a few quid more expensive.
3: Can't put the them out on display.
4: Takes up a lot of hard drive space.

Now that the architecture is similar to PC's you would hope that with both methods they will be backwards compatible with future consoles from MS/Sony.

Just wanted to see where everyone else stood before I decided one way or the other :).

I think its worth buying them in sales, otherwise RRP's are too high.

I did however buy titanfall on digital as I knew as an online game it's something I likely wouldn't sell.

The vast majority of my games will be on discs. Even if I had fast internet (which I don't), the price alone is the main factor and there's simply no reason to be paying significantly more for the same thing. I don't tend to trade-in or sell games because I don't really buy games that I won't want to keep, but I'd at least prefer to have the option there.

Building up a library of downloadable games isn't going to do you much good if, as many did at the start of this new gen, you switch sides and end up selling your old kit, or the service is terminated on the old console which means you can't get online to download them.

Yeah I guess if ypu.dp have a huge library of games you'd have to either stick with the same platform holder or additionally keep your old console as well.

As for the length of the service I guess thats the risk you take with anything Itunes, Netflix included. :)

The digital prices on the Xbox one are absolutely diabolical from what I saw, I can't see why anyone would go digital only for consoles (Well, my experience comes from the Xbox one) when they're bending you over for the convenience.

I've not gone fully digital but can see myself buying more games online this generation. Part of this is simply that I'm buying far less games than I used to on console.

I bought a PS4 at launch where I only have 4 full price retail releases. The most recent purchase was Infamous SS via PSN.

Last generation I built up a fairly sizeable 360 collection and easily had over 100 games on the shelf, however I've been selling/trading-in/giving these away over the past few years. This will probably continue until I just have a few 360 games I'd like to keep or the 360 packs in.

For me the reasons for preferring digital are:

  • Convenience and saves space.
  • Becoming more and more a PC gamer again after I spent the last gen mostly routed to 360.
  • Rarely trade or more so sell games, at least in a time frame where they are worth much and occasionally go back to old games (still trying to complete Bioshock Infinite).
  • As I have less time I'm more choosy about what I'm buying now so will stick to games I want and therefore don't mind the odd full price digital purchase like Destiny.
  • With more and more games moving to 'paymium' (f2p/in-app purchases) models again I'm happy to be more selective about what I buy.
  • Mirrors my strategy with Music/Movies and TV where I use Plex, iTunes, Netflix and Flixster to stream content on different devices (thrown all my old DVD/CD cases away).

The only exception to this are the Nintendo machines where I have modest library of DS/3DS/Wii and Wii U games I would like to keep.

Doesn't mean I won't buy a disc game any more but over time it's inevitable I'll go 100% digital on consoles particularly if Nintendo leaves the market or the rate of change and evolution continues with digital devices/eco-systems and storefronts etc.

X1 digital prices seem overly high from what I've been seeing, so going digital on x1 whilst possible, seems you'll be paying a lot more for your games, also with going digital you really do buy into the whole eco system of the platform.

Now, Sony on the other hand seem to be going down the road of valve and its steam platform. ok, I'm not saying psn is any cheaper then xlive, well it can be for some titles. wolfenstein was cheaper on psn then x1, but sadly this same tltle was some £15 cheaper at Tesco over digitally on x1 and £10 cheaper over psn at the same store.

however, MLB the show on psn is actually competitive on its digital price, at £38.49 its on par with buying online .... likewise with trials fusion.

psn has recently had good sales, much like steam does, which brings me to the comment of Sony seem to be going the way of steam. however to answer the question, no not gone full digital due to prices mostly.

I don't tend to trade games up anymore. I used to do this, but recently have stopped, haven't traded a single ps4 game, and intend to keep my ps4 games. I would sell old games, fancy playing it again, and just rebuy it, so to stop this I've decided to keep all future games I purchase... a decision I made when I purchased my ps4, sold my ps3 and regretted selling the ps3 and games.. since repurchased a PS3 and some if the games I sold...

So far I've only got 2 games for the XB1, both are digital downloads

Normally I don't trade games in, so it works for me

It's more expensive though, but do try to mitigate that by buying points cards from the cheapest source

One thing that was disappointing though is how long it takes to download & install the games (even on my 80Mb/s FTTC connection)

I rarely replay games so I buy physical to sell. Eg, inFAMOUS SS, cost me about £5 to play after I bought and sold it. Only buy games that I'm forced to due to no physical media and I don't mind that. I rarely find a game I like these days so I'd be gutted to spend £50 and then be stuck with something I hate after an hour.
On PC I always buy digital as resale value doesn't exist due to cd keys etc.

I have bought quite a few digital games for a few reasons. Convenience is a big reason of course but another reason is my biggest. I'm finding that with digital, I'm taking my time with the game, exploring more, getting as much out of it as I can because I know I can't sell it. I have rushed games or sold them prematurely in the past and later playing them again some time later, knew that I has missed out due to my haste.

Yes I know they are more expensive but it's only the cost of a night on the town at the end of the day, and I do think you appreciate your purchase more as you have it for good.

The disadvantages way outweigh the advantages for me.
With disc based games: There is a game shop 2 mins from my house if I want to trade in. Or I can just order online and have it dropped through my letterbox.
My PS4 is about 2 metres from where I sit so having to move 2 metres isn't really an inconvenience for me.

I would be VERY surprised if we ever saw anything like steam sales on consoles. It's a closed market with no competition. Publishers have shown time and time again that they are simply to greedy with digital games on consoles.

All of my games bar one are on disc (I have a digital copy of Ghosts which was £22 and also includes a copy for the 360). The price alone is the main reason for getting my games on physical media.

All of my games are in a cupboard directly below the TV thus changing discs is not an issue.

My interest in digital will only increase if the prices become competitive with physical copies (cheaper*) and give you all the advantages of the physical copy itself. Until then I will stick with physical media.

How can they make it disappear off my HDD?

It's tied to your account and activated on your console, they could theoretically do whatever they like e.g. invoke DRM to stop it from being playable etc.

Don't get me wrong, this sort of thing is hugely unlikely and the backlash would be huge, but it's not without some form of precedent either and the idea that "it's yours forever" because it's not on a disc is really rather counter-intuitive.

Well kind of, but not really, if I buy a game then it's mine. If they decide to invoke my rights to that game they can bloody well give me my money back as I am the owner of said purchased content.

I do see your point though.
