I'd say that's a good shout, my 2 780s cut through basically everything at max settings at 1440p with ease - can't see any titles coming soon which will change that, except for The Witcher 3 maybe (hopefully)

Unless the next generation of cards bring huge performance boosts, I don't think it's worth upgrading to the GTX-800 series or R9-300 series if one already has multiple Titans/780s/290s. I for one will most likely wait for the GTX-980s before I upgrade, I'm loving SLI and don't think I could go back to a single card any time soon so I'll probably get 2 980s as I'll hopefully have more money by then

Well we should expect single big Maxwell to bring just under sli 780ti performance, but of course as I said earlier we probably wont see big Maxwell straight away

Would be nice but I highly doubt we will see nearly a 100% performance improvement in a single card vs duel 780 Ti's in 1 generation i.e 7xx to 8xx.

I'm guessing it will be 680-->780Ti type performance gains.

that is exactly what he is saying - big Maxwell aka GM110, the first releases of Maxwell are likely to be GM104, just like with GK104 - GTX680/670 and then later GK110 Titan / 780 / 780ti etc.
though there might be less of a gap from GM104 to GM110 coming out this time round

I know I'm just clarifying.

2 x 780 Ti's will not be overtaken by 1 x 880 or even close for that matter, Maybe 75% - 80% of an SLI setup, But otherwise that would have to be nearly a 100% performance increase which has not been seen before unless we're talking LN2 benching.

Looking back at 2 x 680's in SLI compared to 1 x 780/Ti, The SLI 680's still outperform.

The 980 however in 2016 will easily overtake 2 x 780 Ti's.

Look back at the 6990 vs 7970 or 590 vs 780 (ok bad example) but you get the idea, the top card is normally just behind two of the previous best.
It has just been thrown all out of whack this time round because we had the slower 680(GK104) instead of the 780 right off the bat.

With 2 watercooled and oc'ed 780s everything runs at 100+ fps and ultra settings anyway, so what's the point?

You never know in a year's time 4K panels might be cheap.

2 780s will run 4k with no problems.
Maybe I will have to upgrade to 6gb versions but doubt it.
And I don't really play games that require some insane gear.
ESO, Star Citizen, MWO and WoT is pretty much all I play these days.

Thats assuming they even are using the same process nodes.

A lot of noise indicates AMD is launching a new GPU called Tonga which is made on the GF 28NM process,which could be superior to the old 28NM TSMC process.

The console SOCs for example,look like they will now be made at GF too(primarily down to WSA).

If they do this they might skip ahead to the GF 14NM process next year.

I assume you mean "buy a new cooler for your 290"? If so, why do you need to do this? Surely the cooling solution that AMD have is enough?

1 x GTX 880 (assuming that means full GM210 or GM110, or whatever it'll be called. The successor to GK110, i.e. the 780 Ti) should beat 2 x 780 Ti's actually.

The comparison you should use is the GTX 580 vs the GTX 780 Ti, both are the full/final version of a die shrink and an architecture change. And the 780 Ti is actually slightly more than 100% faster than a GTX 580, meaning it's faster than SLI GTX 580's even if there was perfect scaling.

Another comparison you could use is the AMD HD 4870 vs the HD 6970, a die shrink and architecture change and well over 100% faster (though it is 150W vs 250W, but if you adjust for power then the HD 6970 is still ~125% faster than the HD 4870)
