omg 56 way too young to die :( RIP Rik. watched The Young Ones on my black and White TV in my bedroom when first aired coz dad was like "this is'nt funny" no dad it was properly funny you utter utter .... heh.

In my 42 years of living on this earth this is the first time i've actually felt gutted that a celebrity has died.

I can't stop thinking about it :( and lot's of people at work last night felt the same.

R.I.P.

One of the best, can't believe it in so much as I can imagine him popping up in a newsflash dressed as Flashheart calling us all idiots for thinking he could actually die.

Rest in peace Rick, one of the most memorable comedy actors to grace our screens.

Young ones, New Statesmen, Comic Strip and Black Adder are highlights for me. Truly a great comedian. Shame

Same here. It's really quite amazing just how many people are genuinely sad to hear this news. He really did touch so many lives with his comedy. I hope that gives his family some degree of comfort.

"Woof!"

Deffo going to rewatch the young ones and bottom and watch I didnt see him in (Blackadder)

You're in for a treat, Flashheart has some of the best moments in an already brilliant Blackadder! (apart from series 1, which was dung).

Gutted...

Had a "Bottom" marathon last night, and despite seeing every episode LOADS of times, I haven't laughted so much in ages.

Filthy, Rich, and Catflap - often forgotten, but also great work.

Tonight = The New Statesman - one of my favourite ever series:

Alan B'Stard: You know the really great thing about a fudged coalition is that neither of us need to carry out a single promise of our election manifestos.

Rik Mayall was in series 1 as well, as Mad Gerald in the final episode, again totally stealing the scene in his one appearance.

Rik Mayall was basically the Elvis Presley of my generation.

Bottom was easily my favourite comedy growing up. I used to watch the videos all the time. I went to see the first Bottom tour in 1993 I think

The tribute he would have been most pleased with...

Hated by Daily Mail readers. :D

As a teenager Bottom was just incredible, everyone at school watched it and then quoted the lines they could remember the next day. It is hard to believe the amazing programs the BBC used to put out. You just can't imagine anything like it now.

I think my favourite and possibly first memories of Rik however were when he read Georges Marvellous Medicine on CBBC.
