Remember real exclusives

Makes sense in some ways because the architectures are converging, making multi-platform titles more feasible. Additionally, unless you are a AAA Dev it probably isn't that easy to persuade the manufacturer to give you a big wedge for exclusivity.

The way I chose my current gen console was based on there being a seemingly good deal available.

FWIW the main reason I have bought multiple consoles in the past was to cover off the exclusives e.g. I got an XB360 after getting a PS3 so I could play Forza, PGR4, Halo 3 etc. And no doubt I will ultimately end up doing the same this generation so I can have a crack at Uncharted4 or whatever.

I typed some long reply about how the Wii U is awesome, then my browser decided to die. So yeah the Wii U is awesome.

But the last consoles to really have exclusives were PS2/Xbox?

Nothing what it was like back in the days of Nintendo/Sega though :)

Agreed ps2 and Xbox seemed to be the last generation that had some proper exclusives.

Games cost too much to make these days to be exclusive to one console.

Don't think that is true.

What size is the player base of PS3? Same for 360?

Put it this way there should be around 8 million PS4 players within it's first 12 months growing to 80 million within 5 years.

How much does the average game cost to make?

How much of the profits from a game sale goes to the developers?

GTA made $1.3 billion in profit for example for rockstar, yes it was multi plat release but half that and it's $0.65 billion.

That kind of cash would set developers up for the next 10 years no problem (just off one game), never mind DLC's, etc.

The problem isn't profit levels, the problem is the quality of the content, the demand is clearly there for brilliant games, developers on the other hand cannot meet those quality levels so they don't do well.

How much would someone have to pay you to give up $0.65 billion?

That's why you don't see many third party exclusives.

not many games will ever make that much, GTA was special but it just shows you that if an exclusive was well made it doesn't need anything more than one platform.

if someone offered you £10 million for exclusivity you would take it no doubt in most cases. it's guaranteed money.

i have no idea how much developers make or what their development costs are, so i've just plucked that number out of thin air.

he said "Games cost too much to make these days to be exclusive to one console" that isn't true. It's got nothing to do with costs but sales. If they can sell enough to do well on one console then they can make exclusives.

Otherwise there would be zero exclusives. Games like Infamous, etc all turn a profit and they are exclusives.

In fact it costs more money to develop for 2 or more consoles than it does one. But you usually recoup those costs easily if it sells well which is why they normally make multi-plat games as they don't cost that much to convert onto another platform in comparison to developing for one console alone.
