Hi All,

Just been looking at my electric bills and trying to figure out if what i'm using is about right as it seems over the top to me.

Right I live in a 3 bed detached bungalow with gas central heating and water. Everything else is electric. Things that I know are on 24/7 is the fridge freezer, filter for fish tank, sky router, 20 port gigabit switch, 2tb nas, 2x sky hd boxes and 2 laptops.

Other items are couple of games consoles, 1 40" lcd tv, 1 32" lcd tv, 1 22" led tv, av amp/receiver, oven and hob and probably various other things like phone chargers.

Theres 2 adults and 2 kids in the house and according to my last bill we used 662kwhr of electric, which to me seems silly.

Obviously i'm going monitor daily usage from now to see if it's right, but just wondered what other peoples usage was.

I only have fridgefreezer, router, alarm clock and dect phone on 24/7. Everything else gets switched off when not in use. Although my PC usually stays on all day/night if I have been using it and going to use it again.

662kwh based over how long, a month? That is a lot.

My current bill is £64 for last quarter.

650kwh over 3 months here, 2 person household, nothing left on at night.

Gas cooker, electric oven, and gas CH/Water.

I agree 662kwhr is crazy, Ive just had a look at mine and April was 660kwhr and May was 584kwhr so mine is crazy as well :(

We live in a 3 bed semi GCH + Water and gas Hob, all the rest is electric.
To be honest you list of items looks pretty much the same as mine, Fridge-Freezer, fish tank, Virgin router, 3 x 8 port gigabit switches, 2tb nas, Sky HD box etc etc..

1 50" Plasma 1 43" Plasma 1 32" LCD av amp PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One Phones tablets on charge 3 PC's left on when not in use.

We have 2 adults and 1 child, a son who doesn't know how to turn lights, TV's or computers off and a Wife who uses he tumble drier even when its nice weather because "it makes the towels feel softer" :(.

So Im pretty much in the same boat as you :(

edit to add a screen grab from my account ...looks grim

Ahh well suppose i'll just have to unplug the drier during summer!!

About £10-15 a week.

TV, sky box, ps4, fridge freezer, av amp, 2.1 sound system, washing machine, microwave, toaster and 3 snake vivariums.

Pretty cheap for all that really, and that is a comprehensive list of what's plugged in, other than my laptop and phone at certain times. My place is pretty bare still.

Yes tumble driers are bad for supping up the leccy. I've not used mine for a month now while the weather is fine. They still dry ok indoors on a clothes horse next to an open window at this time of year.

We use 1000 a week

6 bedrooms/3.5 bathrooms though with 5 people in the house including 5 big screen TV's, 2 media boxes, large American fridge freezer, 3 computers, 3 games consoles, electric oven and tumble is always on due to washing needs and also specialist equipment for our daughter.

just movedinto a new house and are with British gas for both electricity and gas we have one of those power monitors electricity is always less than 80p a day and as it's summer we are rarely spending anything more than 20p per day on gas , so if it's accurate i think were doing well , there is only usually my pc and a tv used mainly also switching all the bulbs to led bulbs has made a difference hope ... can't confirm as when we moved in we swapped them immediately

£500 a month on electric?

We use about 300KWh per month, thats about £35. 2 people, electric hob, shower and tumble dryer.

~14 units a day currently, ~30 units in the coldest parts of winter... Used to be ~50 in winter until we discovered our storage heaters do not stop charging when the economy 7 clicked off in the morning!

around 300 kw/h a month, more like 200kw/hr a month from may-sept.

note that this is gas/electric however heating (gas) is never used (bar for hot water) and electric shower. (also use electric heater in winter months).

Remember (I know this is basic) but the main things that will use electricity are for heating eg white goods, oven, shower etc. Things like LCD/video games consoles are far less (Unless you have a massive plasma/power hungry PC)

(in a small 1 bed flat with 2 people)

4 bed detach, 2adult +2kids
We use around £80-90 a month, pretty steady all year round

I went round the house with the monitor turning it all on/off.
found we used 0.5kwh with just the essentials turned on, Ie fridge/freezer/boiler/alarm.
Discovered the two things that used the most were tv's and tumble dryer.

Worked out during the day and evening tv's were on maybe 6-10 hours a day between us all, watching as well as background noise, so 1 unitx10 hoursx30 days was =300 units a month on just tv!

Add in say 2kwh drier, 10 hours a week is another 80-100 units a month.

We are a pretty similar setup, 3 bed bungalow with 2 adults and 2 kids.

Always on - Fridge/freezer, router, NAS, Sonos setup, Tivo, VHD box. Then we have a fair few things on standby, consoles, computers, bedroom telly and hall and kitchen lights on all night - LED bulbs tho..

Gas heating and hob but electric oven, also use a dehumidifier a fair bit - even today was on after a bath as bathroom fan broke months ago...

50" telly with big av amp that seems to be on all day if someone is home, kids have all sorts of things on the go all the time - eldest will have her computer on, stereo on and using phone at same time - i guess my point is that while i have low power bulbs we do not carefully use electricity and still no where near your usage op!

Should be accurate as submit a reading each month

I live in a block of 6 flats and all the electricity meters are next to each other. All I know is I use nearly twice as much as everyone else :(

One reason I do like summer! Those really high electric readings were due to the boiler breaking and a couple of portable electric heaters were being used.

Well did some meter readings yesterday morning and this morning, and they are Yesterday at 9.25 16258 and this morning at same time 16270 so used 12 units which isn't much but I did switch everything off in the garage so am going to monitor it again tomorrow and then switch the garage stuff back on. CCTV, and a network switch is in the garage.

Over the last 10 months we average 213.3 units per month. Max of 246, min of 173.

3 bedroom mid-terraced, 2 adults and 1 toddler. All the usual gadgets, large TV, 3 consoles, Sky box, high specced PC running from 5.30am-11.30pm, dryer etc.

Gas cooker though, so that probably helps.

3-bed semi. 2 adults. 3 kids (2 at school, 1 not). GSH (currently off).

I've just checked our electricity usage and it seems relatively high to me.

We have a dehumidifier which we use a lot during the winter months as we dry clothes indoors, which probably doesn't help. We're using it less and less at the moment, due to the better weather.

We have a Plasma TV which is on pratically all day and I think that is a major contributor.

I have a NAS on 24/7 and consoles, Humax, Oven, Microwave all on stby when they're not being used.

Integrated Fridge & Freezer, f/f in garage. Dishwasher 3 or 4 times per week. No tumble drier.

The LED TV in my kids room doesn't actually have an off button. It can only be placed in stby (nice move Samsung) so I started turning it off at the wall last night as a first step in my quest to reduce my bills.

I know every little (is supposed to) helps, but I don't think having LED/energy bulbs all over the house helps much when you factor in their cost. It'll take several years for them to pay-back.
