Golf R - Test Drive

I think the point is that they are trying to race him regardless of who has a faster car. I get the same, though mainly GTI's and VXRs. The price of the R tends to keep them out of the hands of that sort of folk.

Spot on, I had no interest in racing him.

I think the excellent lease deals on the R's have made them very accessible.

Don't take it too personally, just don't race. It's hardly a new thing that young lads in fast cars want to take on other cars for a giggle. Lots of people 'race' each other for fun and they don't call each other nobs for it (sic).

Racing like a knob, that's another matter.

On the subject of the car, I'd gladly own one but they're very 'keenly priced'. Four exhausts is a bit Marmite, but I wouldn't let it put me off.

I had one race me last week, he blasted past me to be fair and as I looked across it was an old fella about 65 :D

These deals are fantastic value, would love one of these but just can't quite make the maths add up paying ~£300 per month (on average, excl. fuel) for something you are only meant to drive 5k miles a year :(

No quicker than either the Golf or the 135 though?

... which is quite ridiculous when you consider that the Zs are meant to be the sports cars of the model lineups.

The Golf R doesn't do anything for me. It needs some bodywork tweaks to set it apart from an otherwise mundane looking Golf. (stupid quad-exhaust aside).

It has a powerful engine and a 4WD powertrain, but is lacking on aesthetics.

It's not ridiculous at all, it's common sense that two cars of the same sort of weight fitted with the same sort of engine power wise will offer similar performance

Definitely. They were very tempting for a lease deal.

The headline figures are but how many of us want to pay thousands of pounds a year for a car we darn't use for fear of the heavy mileage restriction? Seems more about ensuring there is a nice supply of low mileage 2 year old Golf R's for the dealer network if anything.

Ask for a lease for average annual mileage + a few thousand miles contingency (or calculate the excess mileage cost on that contingency) and it's a heck of a lot more expensive.

In the case of the Golf deals the mileage excess is 7.2 pence per mile so the costs aren't nearly as bad as some, typical deals are based upon 8-10k pa so adding 10k to that is £60 p/m which isn't an unreasonable sum IMHO.

That's what I've ordered mine in, not going to arrive till circa October though!

Going for midnight blue, lapiz blue is too bright for me and winter pack , 5dr dsg

Seriously tempted to lease one of these. Anyone tried a manual one?

Not seen any manuals at the dealers. The DSG seems very popular when I looked at all the stock that is listed through VW uk network

Not too long ago the m135i was on a similar lease. Wonder how many got those :)

Didn't think it was going to be a popular option really, will have to try find a dealer with one in stock to play with I guess. Having said that I'm not exactly adverse to the DSG having spent plenty of time in a mk5 with it. I'm just not too bothered about it on a lease car seeing as it adds a decent amount to the ownership cost and it's not exactly something I'm going to have to worry about with resale.

Mileage correction yo - Baz from gumtree will sort you out in Tesco's carpark.

There are some good deals floating about on these, much as there was with the M135i last year.

Are the cheap lease deals still around for this? Had a look but it's around £300 a month for a DSG.

They do look fantastic bar the quad pipes.

The one I'm looking at currently is £275 or therabouts. It's much the same as we had last year with the 135i as people have already said, so that's 6+23 payments with 8k mileage.
