Stripped out and tuned up Megane 275 Trophy-R smashes front-wheel drive 'ring record

It could go round the 'ring in 5 minutes for all it matters, nobody is going to spend 36k on a Renault anything.

They will probably sell out in the first day or will all be pre-sold.

Some people want a seriously quick and easy to drive quick track/road car, this will do exactly that. :)

Vice La France! :D

Whilst I have a bias for RWD I'd happily own a Ford or Renault hot hatch or a Jap hot hatch. The tech and engineering utilised makes them far more dynamic to drive despite being FWD. Heck the Fiesta ST is a marvel even the old Pug 205s still perform well handling wise.

It's remarkable that they've made such a good car in terms of handling and track capability and power for a relatively modest sum.

Sure it isn't to everyone's taste or not everyone can see the point but this is a cracking achievement.

True that.

If I wanted a car for track work that I knew I could drive at 10/10ths all day long, I wouldn't want my current car.

My EP3 was superb on track. Perhaps a few more mods would have made it perfect but it was capable of much more than my own limits in the form I had it in.

Saying that though, it took a lot of work to reach that standard. Renault are just offering an out if the box solution here. Not everyone wants to modify a 8/10 year old hatchback. Some people will want to just benefit from a manufacturers own R&D.

Whether or not ring lap times are important or not, it really does prove a cars capability of handling technical road quickly.

Its an achievement for FWD

If i had rwd car it would finish as known around those forums supra.... TWICE :D

I like driving I drive 60% of my working time. But i am not a very good driver like Gibbo maybe above average. My DC2 got much more to offer than i can use.
Defo person that likes self driving cars like EVO or GTR :D

pretty damn impressive!!! things will really get interesting when these google/audi/bwm/whoeverelse self driving cars get a chance to floor it around the 'ring :p

There was a time when young lads were excited by fast hatchbacks.

I think its a hell of an achievement. Look at the Caterham r500 its time beat. Then consider arguments about "Stripped out" bla bla bla.

Its a lot more practical than a car without a windscreen.

I also think it's an impressive achievment.

Would anything else brand new off the production line go quicker round the track that costs less than £36k?

In the real world however, the car is pointless. Unless your commute to work is down the 'ring of course.

According to the article it's closer to £40k when you add the options the record setting car has. Would be interesting to know what the ordinary 275-R does it in without all the fancy additions.

who can legally exceed 40mph

At least you got one thing correct. Do you want to come visit in your hybrid? Get some practice not crashing before you add more power to your current car? ;)

Part of what makes a DC2 a DC2 is the fact it is fwd

I do not dispute this at all. Anyway, it's a valid question - albeit entirely hypothetical. The DC2 is a fantastic FWD platform and I would gladly sing it's praises all day long. However, do people buy a DC2 JUST because it is FWD? Some people might - But it's certainly an odd thought process outside of some very strict reasons. Such as competing in a FWD only motorsport class, for example.

Ignoring for a second that the DC2 is an excellent FWD vehicle, given the choice to have it in RWD would you? It's a genuine question. The answer does not have to be "Yes". Maybe people DO buy DC2s because they are FWD and everything else is secondary to that, but that seems odd.

People buy cars because of the overal package, most people don't even know what drive their cars are.

A DC2 would have no benefit from RWD and would be slower in most people's hands. The real thrill about a DC2 (I guess you haven't driven one), or indeed any fwd honda, is the way you can drive it at 10/10th without going backwards into a hedge and torque steer / wheelspin not being a major factor.

The steering feedback of a DC2 makes a stock S2000 feel disconnected.
