National Service

Sure, national service; handling will have to be outsourced to some nice private company of course, who will make some more billions and get free labour, therefore undercutting even more the rest of the lower paid jobs. Perfect.

I did the national service, in France, was one of the unlucky ones from the last years it was still on. I was used as pretty much slave labor, with no rights, no pay, and the net result is that 1) I'm no longer in france and 2) I'm antimilitarist for life.

Great result to nurture national pride and stuff, I tell you.

Social responsibility, sure, but national pride isn't a good thing.

Don't intentionally confuse 'national pride' with 'nationalism' and all the crap that is associated with it. I'm proud to be British, when you look at some of the scary stuff that goes on elsewhere in the world, why wouldn't I be proud to live in a country where all but the minority of small-minded bigots are accepting of other creeds, ethnicities and lifestyles?

Would you like to know more?

I would love to see it being offered to low rate criminals rather than jail time. They may benefit and it would help keep jail populations down.

As a big plus to that idea it might make it easier for me to get an L22A2 and ammo ooh and some grenades thinking about it.

Putting teenagers through training does not guarantee you'll get a decent soldier at the end
and given that you have to rely on everyone in your squad to survive, lots of recruits are just going to die because of someone's screw up.

This is just making cannon fodder out of people we've already invested a lot into raising, many of whom are better suited to pen pushing, not facing up to kamikaze retards who were born with an AK47 in their hand.

In the future we should stop involving ourselves in saving backward sand peasants from themselves, if they really want to perpetuate 1,000 year old tribal wars because their Sky Pixie is the best, then that is better known as cleansing the gene pool of defects.

Is that how you felt when you went to war for this country Efour? like a pawn?

No it felt like a club 18-30 holiday:confused.

I can appreciate all the psychological BS they put you through to be an efficient soldier and build bonds with your mates so that can be used to make you a better weapon etc etc.

I would never fight, sign up. do service, unless it were a war of survival.

Wonder how many people would leave the UK and never return if national service came in?

The bit I wonder about is the inevitable opt out for the Muslim community. As I'm sure a large proportion of the wars involved would be in Islamic countries. That would screw up the concept of national service straight away.

Yeah, it wasn't especially cryptic or anything mate :)

Haha good to hear :D

Why is national pride a bad thing ? Are you advocating that everyone should despise their own country ?

I'm proud to be English and to have served my country, but it doesn't mean I run around with rose tinted glasses on. I know we have a lot major issues which need addressing, but I resolve that side of things at the ballot box.

National pride not being a good thing isn't the opposite of people despising their own country. There's a huge middle ground. Pride in your own country makes little to no sense, as it's dictated by arbitrarily drawn lines on a map, that determines where your pride starts and ends.

I am not proud to be English, I feel fortunate that I am due to the circumstances a lot of other countries have been in but I see no reason to be prideful of that. I would not fight for any country, as it's effectively the government. I would happy fight for the people I care about if it came to it, and I wouldn't stop at people I only knew and cared about, but I'm certainly not going to go out of my way to serve a government who really doesn't care about its people.
