Skyrim - How To Enjoy It The Most?

I've just bought Skyrim in the Steam sales and so far I'm both impressed and slightly lost. I'm struggling to settle on a play style I'll enjoy throughout the game. I quite like the idea of creeping about and shooting people with arrows from the shadows. Equally I like the idea of blowing things up with spells. Hitting them with big hammers also sounds ok but may be a bit boring in the long run.

The only thing I want to avoid is being a jack of all trades and ending up missing out on exciting perks or abilities because of it. If I hit something with an arrow and then burn it with a spell before finishing off with a one hander, will I end up too widely spread? Do I just do what seems fun at the time and see how my character turns out or do I focus?

I realise the game is old hat to many now, but how did you approach the game and were you happy with how things turned out?

Mod it you can really improve the graphics. Its a great game how ever you decide to play it

I would do this, you'll end up settling into the role you enjoy most. You'll probably waste a few perks in trees you don't go very far down, but the best way to find out what you like is try out everything and see what you end up doing naturally.

Just bear in mind that you don't *have* to spend your perks on the skills you use the most. My current character does lots of lockpicking and sneaking but has barely any of the perks from those trees because they're not absolutely needed.

You can mix any of the skills you like, the problem is that you only ever get 1 perk per level so if you use lots of skills you'll be spreading the perks thinly. After you've played for a bit take a look through the skill trees you use the most and take a guess at which perks would benefit you the most.

Started off thinking I wanted to be a badass mage, but after a while the spells become very weak, and I found it was much more useful to improve one-handed (giggity) and archery. The stealth damage bonus from being hidden while firing arrows at people makes it very satisfying (especially one hit kills where their body ragdolls away like a rocket)

I just roamed, did a bit of this, a bit of that, followed a few questing lines (some decent, some bad) and I was done in 30-40 hours. Despite its reputation, Skyrim's gameplay isn't great, combat becomes tedious fast (button smashing ftw) and the RPG elements are basic.
It's beyond me how some people have racked up thousands of hours on this game.

I kind of just ran around doing whatever was next in my quest log and eventually completed the game as some kind of spell slinging assassin. On my second playthrough I've spent more time modding it than playing but have settled on a weaponless melee brute.

Elder Scrolls games make me feel like a little kid again. I just love making a character and then going in one direction and kind of playing with the environment. Kind of like a sandbox as a kid, you can just have fun doing anything. Skyrim is great because you'll find something you can do no matter where you go; be it quests, finding an awesome dungeon, hiding from really tough monsters (helps with mods) or finding that really great piece of gear that can change how you play.

Mods of course make this all the more better because you can improve the graphics, the level scaling system, increase difficulty and variety of mobs. Also add tons of new gear and weapons that are integrated through the world and mob level. Saying that though the vanilla game is still awesome and I'd recommend playing that first before modding to get a real idea of what the games about. Then you can spend ages modding and playing with the world in new ways.

Just try not to look at the game in a mechanical way and enjoy the atmosphere in the game world and lose yourself. That's the real joy of ES games.

Don't play it.

Inspiring...

Just play it vanilla style first man. Get a feel for the game. Just give everything a try and see what best fits your play style and then maybe add a few mods where you think it might be necessary. For instance, I really didn't like the combat system, it was as simple as just checking out a few overhauls online and deciding which one I liked best

Enjoy man :)

I'll not be modding the game for some time, if at all. There's no point in modding something before you know what needs improving!

I'm now liking the idea of sneaking about and then using whatever seems best in the situation, should I be discovered. So I'll try a few spells and a few sneak attacks to see what works.

And am I the only one that feels a tiny bit guilty when breaking into people's houses in games?
