Skyrim - How To Enjoy It The Most?

I spent my first play through as a sneaky bow user with some hard hitting one handed melee thrown in. Found it quite easy.
Started a new one using purely magic. Spent lots of time running away after effectively flicking matches at heavily armoured people. Fun though. (Tip: have a crap load of heal potions ready)

This was one of the worst issues when I played. When I used ranged, I'd just find a slightly elevated rock or something and just shoot until the targets were dead. They often ran around randomly, sometimes finding a way to reach me, other times not. The combat system is poor no matter what mods you throw in, I think it's the open world flexibility that draws most people, not the gameplay.

I fell into the same situation with not knowing what to install on my first play through.

After a bit of research "apparently" You want all the unofficial patches to fix the bugs
After that you may want one of the texture mods to upgrade the looks and a UI mod to make it more PC friendly.

I'm not installing anything more than that for now.

>spend longer reading about, watching vids of, downloading, installing and testing mods, than actually playing the game :p

That's how it is for me anyway

Same here, I played it a little then decided to add some mods then took a break, spent the next 2-3 weeks modding it staying up till late in the morning and finally started to play it again to find out that I broke something badly.

So I decided to start fresh, that was months ago and am still in the final process of modding it.

I want to add some idle animations to my character so she doesn't just stand there, but too lazy to go about the installation process which could break my game again. lol

How to enjoy it the most?

With a pot of coffee, a stack of biscuits, a free house and a day off work the next day.

Rinse and repeat until completed. :D

For the first playthrough just go with what comes naturally :)

I'd suggest picking a primary combat skill (you seem to enjoy archery!) and something else as a backup (one handed OR two handed) and go from there :)

See what you enjoy doing in the game world and just go with the flow.

On a second playthrough start to play with different builds. Illusion mage with high sneak is hilarious :D

My advice with anyone playing Skyrim is jump into it with an entirely open mind. And, if you don't like the idea of reading up on all the stuff the game has to offer. Then read the books in game!

I'm not even joking, by reading some of the books in Whiterun at the start of the game you quickly learn of things to do in Skyrim.

Just play how you feel.

I normally start up game and walk all the way to... Bugger, what's it called? Where the thiefs guild is. Do that chain and then go from there and join the dark brotherhood. Making me into a killer :P

I tried to replay the game recently with a few mods and found its still so buggy that it took away the pleasure playing it :(

What bugs are you talking about? No word of a lie, I have barely encountered any bugs... And that's in the 100's of hours across PC and console I've put into Skyrim.

On PC I haven't encountered any (apart from ones brought about by a mod). But on PS3 (until it got patched, although it still did it occasionally), the game would freeze everytime I walked in water :p

On PC, with some mods on, there was a bug where every time I opened a door, if there were any rolls of cheese on a nearby shelf, they would fall off :D

Part of the reason I enjoy Skryim

It's beyond me how some people have racked up thousands of hours on this game.

Mods.... like it or not mods are a massive part of the Elder Scrolls franchise and there are some amazing contributions people have made to the games. Get a good set of mods (S.T.E.P pack is one place to start) and the game becomes amazing! Even the combat!

It's just not a very good game. You have to very heavily mod it and even then it's not amazing.

this is your opinion good sir, doesn't make it a rubbish game! It got it's good reputation from somewhere eh :)

The only people who tend to like it are casual gamers. The game is just so dumbed down and the story unimaginative, but that goes for most of Bethesda's recent games.

I would install some of the common graphical enhancements. I would book a fortnight off work and send your other half away somewhere for the duration. I would get really baked. Enjoy

I played some Skyrim at a friends ps3 and found it enormous!I couldnt pass on the pc modding so i decided to get it on the pc. Just started it and i get a weird problem if i minimize the game and go to desktop, it wont let me go back to the game and will get stuck in the desktop. Its a pity i didnt have much time to see what was wrong. Oh well enjoy the game!

i have to alt+tab to it twice to get it back up, then sometimes the desktop cursor stays up in the game along with the game cursor and it gets annoying

First time through i just explored without doing the story missions until about 40 hours in, 2nd time i modded and went mental either way its a great game.

i find if you click the icon, you get a window thats all black, drag that out of the way and triple click on the icon again. at least thats how i get back in.

op:
first time just do whatever you fancy. personally i'm not a fan of magic but in my opinion mage route wouldn't be too good for a new player, needs a bit of level grinding and good gear to get results from.

my first save i went warrior, although second save i went sneaky and loved it, although some of the stealth bugs are hilarious. as for quests, just follow the main storyline until you want to either branch off or finish it. you'll have a journal full of quest markers before you know it. exploring and entering random dungeons can be good as well, although not all of them have stories attatched.

I would have to disagree with you there again :P Some of the overhaul mods and legendary difficulty are pretty hardcore to be fair. What is wrong with a game being for casual players anyway?? More importantly though, I think you are missing the whole point about the Elder scrolls games as a whole..they have all been quite unimaginative, I have always viewed them and thought they were sold as being more about sandbox and making your own content/roleplaying (I don't do this :D) Again, you are dismissing the game because of your own opinion i.e "It's a crap game because I don't like it" :)
