So I finally got round to installing windows 8.1 Pro and thought I would test the old Os against the new. On first trying Windows 8.1, I was surprised at how slick and quick everything was. Much snappier than Windows 7 but enough of that and on to the testing. You have to take into account that newer drivers have been released as well but I don't feel that would havemade the testing any different and I was on the newer WHQL with 4K improvements on the Windows 7 benches and the only difference is I am now on the latest Beta's instead. Anyways, here is my results.

As you can see, a couple are pretty much identical and every test was run with maximum in-game settings on both Os's. What did stand out for me was how much quicker the frames were with Windows 8. When I ran Hitman Absolution, I checked and double checked settings, as I couldn't believe it. I ran it at 1080P and the GPUs dropped down for 99% usage on both at 4K to ~50% being used on both at 1080P. It does show the higher res is less telling on the CPU and does let the GPUs fly at max possible. The only game that didn't show a vast improvement was Dirt Showdown.

So is it worth switching Os to play at 4K? Ohhh yes :)

Good comparisons, I am impressed with Windows 8.1 too, it's noticeably faster for multi-threaded applications and D3D applications (games). Not sure why so many people dislike it to be honest, it's a great OS overall - and much snappier than Windows 7 as you say.

It's pretty clear why people don't like it. It was designed with touch screen in mind. It should not stop people switching though as installing a start menu app sorts everything out. I have not looked back since moving over a year ago.

Good results there Greg and some really nice gains. Windows 7 looks broken in comparison in a few games.

I am loving Windows 8.1 and all my fears were gone within 10 minutes of using it. The results seriously surprised me though and Multi threaded games are showing vast improvements. I don't use the tab screen and only ever use desktop and that is so similar to how Windows 7 is. Very impressed in truth.

True it was designed for touch screen but it still works perfectly fine for mouse and keyboard usage - just as Windows 7 did, you don't even have to use the metro interface if you don't want to.

Yeah had noticed your improved score in the Tomb Raider bench thread. I could never go back to Win 7 now myself even though i can still score higher on it in some benches.

For me it's unusable without Start8. I did give it a good go as a vanilla install prior to getting Start8 but couldn't get used to it.

Games wise it has been fine so far :)

Good one Greg. Still going to wait a year or 2 before going 4k. Hope Nvidia make a single GPU powerful enough for 4k? Cause as I see it now. It's still not worth going 4k just yet.
