Replacing 290X stock cooler

Yo.

Thought I'd take advantage of the Bitcoin blowout so I got myself a second hand 290X for £250.

I would like some suggestions for a replacement to the stock cooling, ideally for as cheap as possible.

I was looking at something like an HG10 if it ever surfaces, or go with a NZXT G10 and heatsink up the VRM. However if I did do this, I'd try do it with some sort of removeable adhesive since I REALLY do not want to glue it.

Problem is, I want cheap, and I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not going to be allowed to have any second hand links on AIO coolers because of OCUK policy -.-

Still, suggestions are all welcome.

The arctic cooler is sort of ugly. I mean how much do each of these solutions take up in terms of space? How quiet are they?

Already looking at the Morpheus and it's ****ing 4 slots high... I do like the prospect of CFX in the future. Why the hell aren't there any dual slot designs like the non-reference cards...?

An Accelero Hybrid would work on the 290X. And it would only use 2 slots plus a fan mounting area in your case. The only downside may be the price (£70-ish).

Well, I did it, I went with a Kraken G10 and a Corsair H75.

Basically exactly what the Accelero Hybrid is. I got a good price on them too ^^ Thanks for all your help.

I will do when all 3 arrive ;) Only ordered the G10/H75 today and won the 290X yesterday. Should have everything next week, some of the parts /might/ come at the weekend.

Should get some seriously good temps with an H75/G10.

The only problem with putting on aftermarket cooling is the VRM temperatures are high, my R9 290 hits about 90c on VRM1 and I don't think I can stop it, even though my case airflow is high now. Safe temperature but no overclocking :/

Both have issues with VRM cooling. Some people don't have as high temps as others.

Hence why I'd stick some heatsinks on there if I have a problem. Thankfully, not too bothered about overclocking to begin with, because let's be honest, a 290X is a handful more powerful than a 7950 at stock, let alone overclocked and it can run pretty much everything maxed or near maxed at 60FPS at 2560x1440 :P

It's primarily noise I'm worried about and this should in theory be as quiet as the rest of my system, which is pretty silent.

Used a morpheus cooler on my 290x with the supplied heatsinks, I underestimated the need for good static pressure fans and found that while the core temps were great, vrm1 temps were high at around 80c.

I did try some corsair fans which fixed the issue completely, core temps were 60-70c and vrms never broke 70c.

Regardless I've decided to sell the cooler and watercool instead.

Going for a full loop?

It'd be nice if I could, but I can get very near custom loop temps with the NZXT/AIO deal with no real maintenance. Not to mention custom loops are ****ing expensive. That and I literally don't care about my CPU temps. CPU AIO cooling is silly, let alone with an open custom loop.

Ach, see, I can't be havin' none of that 3-4 slot cooler stuff. It has to take up two and that's final! Seriously, though, I like having space for my soundcard to breathe with the possibility of getting another card installed in my machine, if need be.

Nice!

I can do with 3 slots (think the Kraken does that?) but 4 is just too much for me. It is MONSTROUSLY huge though that thing!

Hopefully my H75/Kraken turn up on Monday/Tuesday with the 290X coming later in the week. Can't wait! When you bid on them on ebay you can get them for like £215-220 if you're lucky. SUCH good value for money. I really couldn't justify getting an Nvidia card when I can get an AMD one with this level of performance for so much less.

So, I've got my 290X and all my cooling apparatus.

290X came in great condition, such a steal for £250. In the box, all the bits and pieces. Plugged straight in, didn't even touch the drivers and worked like a dream.

Had real issues with the Kraken at first, I was up at 90 degrees with the stock cooler so I had to fix that today. The rad is now mounted in the front and I'm getting 64 degrees at load which means there are still issues, probably to do with mounting/smudged thermal compound but it's SO much better than stock I'll leave it for now.

As expected, VRM1 is crazy hot so I'm gonna order some heatsinks for it. VRM2 is fine but I'll heatsink that up too. I've hit as high as 108 degrees, so yeah.

It runs fine, but the card's longevity is probably an issue.

Sorry for the horrible picture and cable management, it's usually much cleaner than this, I'm just lazy at the moment.
