Do you think Amazon, Dixons, Car Manufacturers etc. are evading tax on imports?

Companies importing for you or you doing it yourself makes a difference?
Why is the company selling you the stuff different from one based in the UK/EU?
Because it's irrelevant? The premise of the OP is that they are buying stuff from the US because they can't get it here, this is typically the number one reason people buy stuff internationally.
But yes, it does make a big difference. If the parcel gets through, great, you've avoided excessive unjust fees, nothing else happens. The worst that happens is that they realise and charge the correct amount in fees before they send it on.

Is tax evasion okay if you don't get caught or punished for it?
Also that is the minimum HMRC do.
I'm really not at all bothered by it. Additionally, HMRC (or rather the Border Agency) don't do anything more simply because they can't prove whether you requested a low price declaration, or the seller did it automatically and they aren't going to waste time trying to investigate because of the sheer number coming through every day, don't let that get in the way of your scare mongering though.
