Enough gaming grunt to power a 1440p monitor

I'm using a single 290 at 1047/1250 right now with my 1440p monitor and it runs everything brilliant, Battlefield 4 looks stunning I use just 2xmsaa which looks better than the 4msaa on my last 1080p monitor.

I went from a 780ti to a 290 and really see no difference in game between the two at 1440p. Both manage everything I have tried with good results.

I temporarily went down 1 to 290 at 1440 untill I sorted out my heat issues and for some games typically console ports it's no problem. Played DMC and Titanfall at 60 no problem during that time. Tried some witcher 2 and it was ok but it did drop to 30 on places that said dropping to medium for something like that would probably have been enough.

I've had both a GTX 780 that was running a custom BIOS and was clocked at 1.3Ghz so it was a beast... However my current R290 matches it's performance when running at 1.2Ghz, a 100Mhz less!!

I run 7950xfire for my 1440p monitor and can max most games (without AA in most cases though). Would be a cheap option for you, although maybe a bit of a squeeze in that case and slightly toasty.

I went from 2 x7950 to a 780ti cause of heat but both were fine on 1440p with the expectation of a poorly coded watchdogs

I was running 2 7950s for a while there on my 2560 monitor (only at one now as one ended up faulty), for people with 290(x) and 780(ti) they seem good single card solutions but if you wanted a single card solution for maxing out a few games (say the main ones that come to mind), would it be better to keep say an xfire setup and wait for a gen or two to see if any single cards will come out that can do the 2560 resolution for most games?

I can overclock my 290 to equal/exceed my 7950 crossfire setup and have less issues,a 7950 xfire setup is not superior to a single 290 for higher resolutions they are pretty similar and in my experience generate about the same amount of heat! Go with a 290/x or 780ti for the single card if dual card I would go for dual 290's or 780's not 7950's.

I never run AA now I game at 1440P. There is no point when you look at the graphical difference versus the loss of frame rate.

Yeah thats what ive noticed as well but usual set it to x2, just dont understand people who set AA @ x16, The framerate takes a massive hit and not worth it when the game is in motion

I went from my 670 to a 780GTX and its a huge increase in performance. Like people have said, I rarely use AA now as it 1440p upwards you dont see the jaggies that much and the performance hit isnt worth it.

Some maps on BF4 i hit over 100 fps on a single 780.

Just curious how well my system would fair with 1440p ? If I can remove AA then I guess I would be good?

One 670 will struggle if you want to turn up the settings. Really you want at least a 780 or the AMD equivalent at 1400p. If you want to game at 1400p you want to be able to turn up the settings to benefit from the higher res

I have 2 780s but I had to knock off AA running a single 780

A pair of 4gb 670's will do well in games that support SLi. One will do a decent job with a few tweaked settings.

Or you could sell them and go for a single card like a 290 or 780 to get a good all round result.

Get the screen first and see how it works for you. You can always run at 1080p on the more demanding games if you feel it struggles.
