Spec me a true 5.1 headset

So I've been reading further into the whole surround technology and been trying to hone in my ears to perceive surround sound through my stereo cans. Someone hear mentioned binaural sound so gave that a try, as was intrigued.

Watched this youtube clip and was very impressed that I could easily hear what was going on behind me. Although could never really distinguish positional audio from the front this time. Maybe my cans sound stage was not big enough.

Wondering if someone here with good headphones with a big sound stage can hear positional audio coming from the front of this demo?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u163wC6mP2A It's quite scary, be warned. I shut off my lights and monitor and felt very immersed.

even my G4me ones work perfectly with this.

I'm using an STX II and G4ME ones at home and I have pc350 and a EPH-O2D at work.

both this and the barbershop one are easy to listen to and get a feel for positional audio.

but like I said in FPS games a lot of it is associative sound. On Office in CSS you can hear the hostage being rescued from by the filing cabinets in mid but only the hostage to the right of T spawn not the one in the projector room.

Same goes for the dodgy sounds in csgo there are parts of certain bomb sites that the sound isn't quite right and that will tell you where they are more than the headphone.

I remember when someone made a D2 christmas map and the sound was screwed with Hard footsteps on dust soft ones in tunnels. I just couldn't tune my brain to it at all. people running down short sounding like they are on long and people running long sounding like they are short.

Battlefield does support full 5.1 omg even my home cinema system picks up sound from all directions as there happening.
I can easy tell the difference, hell it even has multiple audio options for home cinema etc
Csgo 5.1 works perfectly fine here you sure you even enabled 5.1 in the audio options?

I can have a bot run around me and I can tell each and every time where he is moving.

You very funny if you think bf4 don't support 5.1 tells me you never used 5.1 headset or sound system.

And that video of csgo you do understand that was when the game was in BETA don't you?
Would just for you like a video uploaded to youtube?

video won't show anything his audio isn't yours.....

this argument is pointless anyway it's obvious you're convinced you are a better player thanks to headphones.

I still highly doubt if you were to use my set up at lan you would suddenly not be able to play.

For the money the op has two choices

CAL! + clip on mic benifits here are that they work just aswell as 5.1 nice and light, You can also enjoy movies and music with them
or KAVES/Sirus 5.1 All in one mic Geared towards gaming work fine kaves are a bit heavy can listen to music and movies but will lose some of the fun thanks to the way they were designed for gaming.

If you're planning on spending over £100 I would buy stereo because maximising your use for the money is important to me but it's upto you and the microphone on the tiamats is dog.

The new logitech isn't a touch on the old G35/G36

Why wouldnt a video show anything? In his link the bomb noise cut out, on mine it doesn't.

CSGO beta was 30th Nov 2011 through to the 4th July 2012 - and therefore a video from late 2013 is most certainly not during the beta. There are also, as I said, far more recent threads detailing the same issue and many videos showing the same problem that are in fact merely a few weeks old.

BF4 does not properly support 5.1, as aforementioned. Numerous setups simply cannot reproduce audio of 5.1. Please google it before you further exasperate yourself spewing out the same point over and over whilst ignoring all the evidence and facts put in front of you.

Glad you admitted that 5.1 doesn't "for a fact" "provide better audio positioning" - at least that's progress.

Where did I say it doesn't provides better audio positioning?

I been looking into this CSGO and yes you corret it wasn't beta. But I know think I have the answer. People are switching on 5.1 even when they have virtual 5.1 and thinking that is the correct setting. They are wrong they should only select 2.0 and let the Drivers control the virtual 5.1.
With my having hardware 5.1 it works fine and I will upload a video just for you to show.

Again BF3/4 works perfectly fine here in 5.1, i can hear all the direction from Guns, to tanks to Jets flying past me.
It works simple as.

I got this from DICE as I wanted clarity on the sound settings.

For headphones use: options => audio=> Speaker type= Headphones
And then for 7.1 & 5.1 use: options => audio=>Speaker Configuration= Surround
And for stereo headphones, stereo speakers or 2.1 speakers use: options => audio=>Speaker Configuration=Stereo

Hope this helps.

The Speaker type setting is different mastering mixes made to suite the type of speaker you are using.

The TV setting is made for small speakers with limited frequency range(TVs, monitors, smaller desktop speakers etc.). It’s also good when not listening very loud, like normal TV listening volume. It’s a fairly compressed setting where all sounds are kind of close in loudness.

The HiFi setting is supposed to be an allround setting which should sound pretty good on most speaker types. It has full frequency range and a bigger dynamic range than the TV setting, but it caters for a bit louder listening volume, quiet sounds are a bit quieter and loud ones louder, so you could say it’s a bit more detailed.

The Home Cinema setting is also full frequency and has even bigger dynamic range. Made for listening loud in big speakers.

Headphones setting is of course made for headphones that usually has quite a wide frequency range and also allows for quite loud listening. There is also a bit more bass and treble in that setting.

Speaker Configuration Stereo or Surround?

In surround mode the game outputs a discrete 5.1 or 7.1 signal depending on your setup. You can play the game in surround mode even if you have set your system settings to stereo in windows or on your console.

Then that system(your PC or consle) will fold the signal to stereo. Then the result may vary from system to system( what it does with the center or the rear surround channels and what it does to the LFE or sub woofer channel).

That’s why we have made our own stereo fold down so we can control what comes out. So in that setting there’s an HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) mix being done for better directional awareness and also the discrete LFE (Low Frequency Effects) or sub channel is mixed in to the stereo mix adding the bass from 1p weapons and explosions etc. that could possibly get lost otherwise.

So if not listening in a true surround speaker configuration we strongly advise to use the stereo mix done by the game for the best experience.

War tapes is good when playing the game at a very low volume. It brings everything straight in your face.

Hope this clarifies it a bit.
Good luck!

In BF4 I can hear footsteps and audio cues too when there isn't any LFE effects happening around me (explosions, weapon fire). Bad company 2's mix was so much better for sound whoring even during these scenarios. So for me personally BF3/4's soundscape is worse than BC2's.

I've seen various articles on the Web from "gamers" advising people to change their audio channels to 6 channels instead of 2 (that is the default for stereo) in the xonar audio control panel and then in game use surround sound speaker configuration. I have no idea why this will be better as DICE make their own mix for stereo headphones so why do gamers fake surround sound? This makes no sense to me.

One thing I want to know, do people who have stereo cans enable Dolby Headphone and 7.1 virtual speaker when gaming and enable headphone and stereo configurations in game for BF4?

Yeah 5.1 in BF4 works fine, some people think other wise. I guess they dont have there setup working correct easy to blame the game ay.

On the Xonar I have 6 channel selected also so it outputs 5.1, I have seen people make mistake here by selecting 8 channel even on 2.0 lol because for some reason Asus list this as best for gaming but forget to say only if you have 7.1

Maybe my 5.1 works fine in games because of the Xonar D2X? maybe thats why I love the Kaves so much? maybe people who had bad experience with them used on-board? or a ob-board that does surround poorly?

I had exactly the same setup (D2X and Kaves).

Go and buy some stereo phones from Wilkos and let me know how the sound compares, bet it's the same.

The CAL's are better in every aspect, even your precious positional audio. Come back and argue again when you've tried a stereo set and you've made up more nonsense.

Tried Stereo, sure not a £100+ set but I have tried Stereo and its got nothing on 5.1

Yep this is my personal option.

There's no arguing with Shankly peeps, whatever he has does everything perfect just like his 290's apparently run every game he's played at 120fps consistently. Best to just drop it as he'd argue black is white.

Off topic, but if you want to continue that debate you know where to find me.

I'll emphasise more on this post later on but a good set of headphones for gaming (microphone, aesthetics, durability and weight aside) has more to do than positional audio. The 5.1 cans I had also could pin point footsteps to some degree, but the soundstage was awful. There was no clarity to the sounds, the sound signature was more on the bright side, muted and harsh. Now this maybe something you prefer but overall to my ears it sounded horrible.

So your opinion is fine but you rubbished everyone else's opinion because it's not yours?

Anyway back on track for the OP, this is the general consensus of those who are offering a genuine opinion;

£50 stereo headset > £50 "true 5.1" headset > Nothing

Nothing wrong with a "true 5.1" headset, but the whole 5.1 thing is verging on snake oil etc...

Where did I rubbish everyone else, I never once said don't buy a stereo headset. My argument was when people saying 5.1 is crap and don't work. Even me and op know this is a load rubbish reason for me to have my saying.
Op made it very clear he wants only 5.1.
