It's almost tempting though to see if LvG can finally get Nani to knuckle down and realise some of his potential.

I'd also be happy with Vermaelen as long as his fee and wages reflect his injury history and that he is in addition to, not instead of, a player like Hummels.

On that basis then fair enough (although Im not sure we need Evans, Jones, Smalling, Keane AND two new centre half's, and yes I think Keane deserves a place in the squad rather than being sold / a year on loan) even allowing for Jones and Smalling's versatility

edit as for Nani, Ive lost patience with him - if we can get a good (~10m) price for him from Juve then imo we should free up the squad place

Now is not the time to be thrifty, we need proven quality where possible. I wouldn't complain if we paid £60m for Vidal.

I do think we've got the most important signing that will make the biggest difference already though - the manager.

There are a whole load of players who will significantly improve our team, I think we'll decide pretty quickly whether or not the likes of Vidal and Di Maria are realistically going to happen, and then move on to some other targets. Van Gaal being back will help with this, as he can speak to potential transfer targets and help convince them, as well as assess the players we currently have more closely, and decide how hard he wants Woodward to push for Vidal for example.

We aren't using a director of football model, so it's all down to the manager and what he values the players at, as well as what the board are prepared to pay. The manager being away on international duty makes this significantly more difficult, as he can't properly dedicate his time to it.

The Chilean reports we're seeing all claim that Van Gaal desperately wants Vidal - which may or may not be true - but if it is, then he'll clearly push Woodward to try and sign him at all costs. Same applies to Hummels, or whoever.

This is all without taking into consideration how we're going to play, we've got a somewhat unbalanced team so I wouldn't be surprised if we brought in a few cheaper but decent players to fit in whatever our new formation will be. People worried/thinking we're going to play 3 at the back are wide of the mark, Van Gaal would always favour an attacking system and we have the finances to support such a philosophy. The Netherlands national team (attack aside) is very average and you can't sign players to change that.

Probably the best news I've seen today is that Aston Villa are prepared to pay £7m for Young. Please let that happen.

Actually LOL'd at that comment after last season. :D

What the Moyes era has taught me is sympathy for Liverpool fans - it's basically the same as what Roy did to them and it can't have been nice to watch it happen.

Its the wages that will allow / kill this deal imo

If the low transfer price already reflects this, then no worries - Im just a little concerned that on paper Utd will be able to agree a £7m (lets say) deal, however Utd will then have to pay a good proportion of that to Young to reflect the lower wages and the Utd board wont go for it.

Same applies to Hummels, or whoever.
.

Havent seen any concrete proof - but rumours have started up again that Utd are now chasing Mangala (again?).

If they had kept toothy yeah, but now they have lost a 1/3 of their goals with a very iffy defence and have 2 games a week to contend with

Didn't realise Liverpool were going to start playing 10 now that Saurez has gone?

New Rodgers tactic? ;)

I'd imagine Liverpool are going to sign at least 2-3 more:
Lallana 25m
Markovic 20m
Lambert 4m
Can 10m
Origi 10m (maybe)
So that's 69m (59m).

I'd imagine we will offload a few (Aspas, Allen etc).

Even at spending the 69m I'd imagine still have another 40-50m in the pot.
Lovren 20m
Left back 15m
Another player 10-15m

Also we had a fair number of injuries (also Saurez bite issue at the start). Coates was out lots (all season?), Enrique was out lots, Johnson, Gearrard, Kelly, Sturridge, Lucas all missed a few games.

Top 4 will be tough but I'd say we're still stronger than Man U, Spurs etc.

Shame we aren't getting a 30m+ "start" signing though.

Ospina is a great signing, did well in WC. probably on low wages, and on a free..reckon he'll become no1 next season..

What I want to know is why is Real Madrid selling players such as Di Maria?

He played well in the Champions league final and has had a good world cup too.

They've got Ronaldo and Bale already. No one else to buy! Surprised they didn’t try and beat Barca to Suarez to be honest. Aren’t they meant to be signing a 'Galactico' a season?

We'll see. I'm an Arsenal supporter so my view is biased, but I haven’t been impressed with Liverpool’s signings this summer. But Rodgers is a good manager so we'll have to see.

Is Lallana worth 25m?! That’s an inflated price if you ask me.

Liverpool have conceivably signed 6 players, which is half a team. But it is true tho what Arsene Wenger says. 'You can only play 11 players!' :p

No idea - he hasn't really been seen at top level playing alongside top level players week-in week-out. Of course <20m would have been better but we'll have to wait and see as you said. :) He's only 26 and if he has a poor season or two we could probably get a fair amount back for him at 28.

Can't really argue with the other signings for the figures we've paid even if they're flops (except Markovic).

So we've signed Pelle (edit now official), crap in Italy but decent for Feyenoord, hopefully Koeman will get him firing in the Prem.

"In Pelle Saints look to be getting a striker who is the very definition of prolific having scored 55 goals in 65 games under Koeman in Holland. That is a better Eredivisie record than Luis Suarez and Wilifred Bony, so it will be interesting to see how he compares in the Premier League."

He also had an earlier spell in the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar...where he was crap. In fact, he was a bit of a laughing stock. He is strong and good in the air, but other than that he's a very limited player.

If Koeman can build a team around him he might do OK, but I doubt he'll make Saints fans forget Lambert any time soon.

EDIT: Tadic, on the other hand, is a very good player.

Koeman seems to have provided a decent inroad to a different market than the usual.

Saints have signed the 2nd (two years running) and 4th top scorers from the Eredivisie last year and one of those also had the most assists in the league.

Not bad signings.
