Team Building Ideas

Room's booked for an hour and it's midday
...
It's at 3pm so won't clash with any lunch breaks, this is just to split up the afternoon

So is it midday or 3pm? :-/ If it's 3pm, hit the pub and send them home afterward? I'm sure they'll appreciate that!

The group will be 15-20 and the aim is just to have a break on a Friday afternoon and encourage them to interact with people they don't normally speak to etc

By stuffing them in a meeting room? Are you having a laugh?

sorry but this sounds a really crap team building experience

Yep.

It's not an official "Team Building Day" or anything, just a chance to do something different/fun for an hour rather than sitting at desks

Liked some of the ideas so far, the escape the room concept is definitely interesting!

What made you think that stuffing 15 people in a meeting room for an hour and saying "go on, talk" (or playing charades, the horror) would be fun?

Companies that force their employees into team building days are usually ones who don't employ them as a team. Usually they are salesmen who work on their own fighting for the most commission. So not really a team so why have a team building day.

Black out the room and hire some strippers. That will get their spirits up and talking to people they normally don't talk to.

These pub suggestions, are the right course of action, start at 3 / 4 go to pub / bowling (if bowling split them into teams, winning team gets 1 free beer to each member). It's a small expense to pay for a much more beneficial environment and team building day.

No one wants to sit in a stuffy room in an akward situation, made worse by still being in the work environment with the pressures around them and the undercurrent thought of being branded a Twerp by management for being different/acting different from their desk persona.

Make sure you've got plenty of refreshments, cakes, and fruit for the healthy lot, cold and hot drinks et al - that will at least make the experience slightly enjoyable.

So long as the room has decent air con I'd imagine the heat won't be a problem.

As for activities, I'd recommend something competitive and group the people. Perhaps general trivia questions? I’m really not sure you’re going to be able to make people talk to each other. Around half of the people will, and always will be, completely uncomfortable in that sort of environment and pushing that on them will only make things worse.

The other half of the people will love to socialise and won’t benefit from the experience.

My two pence.

Oh, and pub.
