Best PC games of the last 5 years?

Wow! A lot of recommendations here... might keep me going for the next 5 years! Many thanks all. I've now got all 3 Bioshock games, Civ5, Witcher 1 & 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, FTl and Tomb Raider all sat on Steam waiting for me. My Wishlist is also looking a great deal healthier.

As an aside, there seems to be quite a lot of mention made of controllers. I've never really used one (don't own any consoles except a Wii). Do they make things that much easier? Should I look to invest?

I literally won't play a game that doesn't support controllers, though I do game from my sofa.....

(1080p plasma connected to PC)

Tomb Raider is definitely one of my favorite games of all time, an absolutely superb reboot of the original, with breathtaking graphics and superb gameplay. A must play if your even slightly liked any of the originals.

Civilisation 5
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Deus EX: Human Revolution / Sleeping dogs <- not sure which I preferred, both unexpectedly brilliant.
Skyrim
Kerbal Space Program

I'd say FC3 is a strong contender on my list as I really enjoyed it and it made me want to keep playing :)

wish I could have said BF4..... but with all it's bugs.... meh!

I would definitly buy the Xbox 360 controller for PC. Games like the Batman series and Tomb raider are awesome with a controller. As would be any racing or fighting game.

Diablo 3 is good if you're into that type of game. It's a much better game now than it was 2 years ago when it originally launched. If you're looking to get into it now though I would probably wait for ladders to start which should be later this year.

Civ 5 - Gods & Kings

Mass Effect 2 & 3 (don't be put off by some of the comments both are fun games and deserve your attention)

Shogun Total War: Fall of the Samurai (you get to fire chain guns into massed ranks of infantry, damn!)

The Withcer 2

Skyrim (modded)

Far Cry Blood Dragon (probably the coolest game on the list)

Doh, forgot to add DayZ Standalone, although it's by no means a finished game the play style and intense feeling you get when playing it is frankly 2nd to none. It seems to have sparked a whole load of copy cat titles as well, although I still think DayZ Standalone is the original and best of them all.

Glad to see all the love for Deus Ex HR and Kerbal Space Program, they jumped to mind instantly.

I haven't had a lot of time to play games in the last 5 years so I can't provide a comprehensive list. Plus KSP might not be up your street, but you'd be missing a gem if you didn't go for Deus Ex.

Hmm. For some games that suite the controller I still prefer Keyboard and Mouse. Eg. Recent Batman games and even Tomb Raider.

Personaly I'd say it depends a lot on your seating position. Eg at a desk keyboard and mouse feels so natural, where as if I got into Steam Streaming and used my loving room RV, I'd probably favour the controller.

Sitting at my desk using a controller just feels weird.

Looking at my top 5 played (bar MMOs) on steam:

XCOM
Arma 3
Wargame: Airland Battle
Eurotruck Simulator 2
Crusader Kings 2

Then others I play an awful lot:

Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations
Firefall
Eve Online (not new but always changing)
DCS-A10
