You meant the school did not have a record of her attendence and absences with the reason from the actual event?

I find that hard to believe, each absence at my sons school must be confirmed by letter specifying the reason, this firms part of his record.

In any case, the school knew she had attended he mothers funeral at the time of the absence, it seems rather poor to simply say "we forget" or "we didn't know". Sounds like BS to me.

The Father admitted to it, the school didn't know.
Mrs Dimple says she has no record of the reason for every absence with her kids.
If he had rung the school to inform of the upcoming absence there shouldn't be a problem however here in Stoke they won't give authorised absences apparently.

Maddie’s dad Andy is furious with St Giles’ Junior School in Bedworth, Warks, as teachers still refuse to apologise even after being told the reason behind her absence.

I find it very hard to believe that the school did not know that one of its students parents died after a two year fight with cancer. I think the school is absolutely at fault here, from what I have read the absence for the funeral was authorised by the school, so they knew at the time her mother had died...if the school did not make a record if this, and if the teachers (particularly her form tutor) did not know something as fundamental as a child's parent dying, which I find difficult to believe, then those teachers are clearly not doing their job properly.

I think you will find that the school in January knew the reason why the girl did not go to school...and the reference to her father telling the school was made more recently when it became clear they were banning her from the trip, not that the school wasn't aware at the time of her mothers death. The school is at fault here.

Edit: the school did authorise the absence at the time, they knew about the funeral and the reason for the absence as the gave her a Leave of Absence to attend the funeral...

Even teachers in (decent) school agree. There's too much bearing on data and not enough on teaching. We had an inspection in February, a bit earlier than we should have, as we didn't have enough pupils attaining level 5 the year before. We received a "requires improvement" rating afterwards (just one above "special measures" (though only one middle school in the county has been given anything other than that, which speaks volumes on that agenda!)).

Then from the KS2 SATs in May we just found out a couple of weeks back that we had the 3rd overall results in the County. Go figure. The entire system is completely backwards and is all about negativity and zero emphasis on the positives. That viral letter the other week says it all.

I don't see the issue. She didn't have 100% attendance so didn't get to go on the trip with the perfect kids. Get over it.

It's an unfortunate oversight by the school I doubt it was a deliberate decision just to annoy the girl.

That makes no sense what so ever.

It's a stupid thing to give a party for. Much better would be to give a party for those who achieved high marks or over a certain percentage.

well... you can deliberately undercook poultry or eat out of date food, not wash, eat poorly, eat a pack of laxatives.

Okay thats not trying to get sick, it's forcing sickness upon yourself, but you have to try at it to succeed ;)

errrr did you not notice the brick wall thats now bowed and braced against the outer wall to stop it collapsing?

that's a pretty big bang to nearly knock a wall through.

Unfortunately as far as school is concerned they are pretty closely related. Some research I have seen recently equates to basically a grade less for every 5% attendance missed.

Obviously in this case a day off for a funeral isn't really going to impact much but the school probably didn't even think to check reasons, just sent invites to anyone with 100%. It is disappointing for the child and the father is right to complain but I am not sure it warrants going to the press about though.

This is a common opinion of people who know no better.

Having, in the past, worked with grown up children who frequently have "duvet days" like the skiving rats that they are, I can quite pointedly tell you that these exact inducements work to reduce sickness related absence.

It'll be the same with children; they, similarly to adults, over-egg their illness omelettes to take time off school, but will be less likely to do so when some sort of reward is at stake.

"I couldn't help being sick!" was often the pathetic exhortion when firing or disciplining such malingerers.
 
Well aren't you just a charming individual. Using large words to try and sound clever, too.

I suppose you expect people to come to school/work when they are ill and will spread their sickness around, don't you?
