R9 290 are terrible or is it me ?

so many big reviewers rate the RM series highly so i dont understand why everyone has an issue with them unless you have all used one and didnt have a good experience ?

Do many big reviewers rate the RM series highly?
It's not that they're awful, it's just that they're not that good compared to previous Corsair offerings which used better OEM manufacturers.

Fwiw, my previous RM850 was flawless with 7970CF/2600K all OC'd pretty heavily...

It's not that they're bad, it's more they're not as good as older Corsair PSUs.
For the price they ask, better could be bought ;)

oh right, yeah I don't really remember any old pus's only got to looking for one recently, I read johnny gurus review for the RM850, that seemed to be pretty good, can't really remember what choices there were back when I bought it, I probably should've looked at the EVGA G2 psu's. (no idea if they were even out back then)

Hi,

Bought an R9 290 Sapphire Tri x 3 weeks ago and i still haven't managed to even play a game with it yet. I sent the card back after trying multiple different installs after a week.

I received the card back and they said they had run it for 12+ hours with no issues. However i have tried it on multiple fresh installs of windows 8.1 with all the updates and without, with CCC 14.4 and CCC 13.2. Tried it on win 7 with service packs and updates, without service packs and updates, with just service packs, with just updates, both CCC 14.4, 13.2 and 14.7 beta. Still no luck.

I have ran memory tests to ensure it isnt faulty RAM , Stability tests for my CPU while using a different graphics card.

My system runs fine with my old r9 270x.

It crashes without fail when on video playback or 3D playback and this will result in a system restart while using the R9 290.

My specs are as follows;

MOBO - Asus M5A78L- USB3 BIOS v 1801 (latest)
CPU - AMD FX8350 @ 4.00 Ghz (never been overclocked)
RAM - Avexir 2 x 4GB 1600Mhz
PSU - Corsair RM 650w (Overclockers did test it with the same wattage PSU)

Hope Someone has the answer !

Thanks in advance

If they tested and found no fault then the chances the problem lays with your system.

I noticed your running an FX-8350 on an Asus M5A78L, not a Motherboard i would recommend for that CPU.

Just out of curiosity, why would you not recommend that motherboard for that CPU? I don't think i've ever seen mobo incompatibilities/issues with graphics cards apart from maybe the super cheap ones.

Its a 140 Watt CPU on a Motherboard thats not really designed for it, its doesn't even have a HS on the VRMs.

swapped out my PSU for an 850 now and it still happens. I have however just tested the card in a friends pc as he now has my old 650 and it works fine.

So what to swap out next haha ?

i had to have that board as my case at the time only took micro atx. I do have a slightly bigger case now in the form of an inwin 904 so could have a slightly bigger atx board

Everyone rates the RM series so badly. I have a rm 1000, not sure if because its a 1000w its built a bit better, but touch wood, iv never had a single problem with it, infact id go as far as to say its the best power supply iv had to date by far.
