AMD Tonga arrives in August, replaces Tahiti PRO

no way, that Headset thing is miles away.

but seeing it just now with the new Aliens game and it actually looks pretty good, this means you dont need a monitor...i do like the idea that you can dodge bullets and move into cover by just tilting your head to the left.... your movements are now semi-automatic just like in real life.

the big problem that it needs to solve is field of view, because a tv is rubbish compared to real life which is virtually 170 degrees

Now the big money investor's have clicked on to the possibilities and how many headsets they could sell it will all start coming together a lot faster .

Likely hood is I'll pick up a Tonga 290P gpu for the other pc and to have a little play with. Then the R7 260X (which arrives today) will go into storage as a backup gpu incase one of the others croaks.

Fixed

If you do this you can give trifire a go, it is much more interesting than boring old 2 way crossfire.:D

I will do both Kaap i expect. I'm getting the upgrade itch and sooner or later it will have to be scratched. I can't stop thinking about getting a couple of 290X Lightnings though, so Tri-Fire might have to wait.

Forget the lightnings, too slow.

I think you would find trifire much more interesting and faster. It is only my own opinion but image quality with trifire and even more so quadfire (when all 4 work nice) is better than single or two card setups (you get less glitches and it seems smoother). Trifire tends to work fine nearly all the time and is the best compromise and quadfire can have a few problems but you can always turn off a card if needed.

The other thing to remember about the lightnings is they are air cooled which means most of the time you will be coming off second best to water cooled reference cards (now where is Ranger when we need him).

I know but I've got a weakness for those lightnings with Samsung memory. I could rack my scores up a fair whack i reckon considering what i can get out of my cheap 290P's with Elpida. I will have a think, maybe i can do both if things go my way. :D

I do like the idea of keeping cards like you do, then you can bring them out to show the grandchildren. :p

BF4 + 3 x 290Ps + DX11 + Max settings + 4K is like using mantle at lower resolutions where the fps don't move too far away from the average.:D

I could always keep my better clocking 290P i suppose to go with the Lightnings. One goes slightly higher than the other.

Before long i will be able to use GameDVR on Mantle, then i will get a chance to show it off without the performance hit from running windowed mode and recording and encoding on the fly via GPGPU.

If you operate at the enthusiast end of rig building power consumption is the last thing on your mind unless it effects your over clock.

no, just get next years dual card R390... in my other rig i'll keep the 7970, just replace the mobo

AMD Tonga Based Radeon R9 285 Graphics Card Scheduled For Q3 ’14 – Features 2 GB, 256-Bit Memory, Replaces Tahiti

The Radeon R9 285 will be price in the $300 US range which means that Tahiti based cards will be receiving a major price cut as hinted previously to make room for the new cards otherwise having both Tahiti XT and Tonga at the same price will mean poor sales for the inferior product of the two. The card will launch in Q3 2014 and the exact date is pitted somewhere between late August and Early September but it is definitely coming out soon and we will start receiving more information in the coming weeks.

The specifications for the card include a 2 GB GDDR5 buffer running across a 256-bit bus interface. This is actually lower than Tahiti’s 3 GB GDDR5 VRAM and 384-bit bus but Tonga is rumored to include faster 7 GHz memory modules which will result in higher bandiwdth and card makers will have the option to launch 4 GB models later in production. The card will be built on a new architecture which is presumably the GCN 2.0 design and not the GCN 1.1 architecture which has been featured on Bonaire and Hawaii. The Tonga graphics architecture will be built on the 28nm node from TSMC (if rumors are to be believed) and would feature a new design scheme introducing latest architectural improvements such as new ACE (Asynchronous Compute Engine) Units and more focus towards compute shaders. It is also mentioned that Tonga will retain the basic technologies of the Radeon lineup such as Mantle, TrueAudio and XDMA for CrossFire support. Performance efficiency would be a main focus of the new card and the ratings could be expected somewhat similar to Maxwell if not the same.

Don't think it'll be GCN 2.0. More like 1.2 or just plain old 1.1.

If going from Tahiti to Hawaii wasn't a full version upgrade, then bolting a couple extra features onto Tahiti and improving power consumption won't be either.

GCN 2.0 will be 2015 with 20nm don't you think? Or later

Pointless getting the Lightnings now. Keep your 2x 290P's and either add another or wait.............I'd wait. ;)
