3 Monitors - New Graphics Card

I would personally go for the Powercolour 280x

Doesn't the R9 280 still need an active display port to dvi adapter for 3 monitors in Eyefinity?

I thought it was only the 290's that supported 3 monitors without the need for an adaptor.

Even with amd's old 5850/5870 series cards, they could run up to 4 monitors off a single card. Absolutely no problem with a 280.

Edit. I'm assuming the monitors here have DP.

I know you can - I ran 3 on a 6870 with a dp to hdmi adaptor - but afaik on certain R9 series cards you still need to use the display port for one monitor, or it won't work properly ( lots of hits on google regarding this )

2 dvi + 1 hdmi won't work on anything less than a 290 I think

The op's monitors don't have dp. Only dvi, hdmi & vga.

Just to give my tuppence, I ran a triple 3D monitor setup with a pair of 680s and then a pair of Titans and never had any issues. Adjusting bezel correction took less than 10 seconds and switching gaming on one in 2D/3D or 3 in 3D or 2D was so easy.

I can't comment about AMD but don't see either having any major hang ups in honesty.

Those Titans do look sexy!, do love those cards.
Can we and create a day's experience here for OPs requirements (no 3D).

As an example:

1. want to switch to eyefinty/ nvidia surround with bezel correction for a game of BF4.
2. enough with gaming need to do some work and switch to 2 monitors software development/VM's
3. work is a bit boring now and almost finished. watch some youtube videos also, switch to 3 regular monitors (no bezel correction)
4. work done. switch back to eyefinty/ nvidia surround with bezel correction for another game of BF4.

We could each upload this process on youtube and see in comparison of driver/ software implementation, between eyefinty and nvidia surround.

What do you say Gregster? I have a feeling my 290 will crush your sexy beasts only because nvidia surround's driver/ solution is lacking!

Why would you want to turn 1 monitor off for the VM bit? :D surely you just don't use that monitor?

OP can get a card which has 2x DVI + 1 x HDMI outputs but they do seem to cost a bit more. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-347-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1842

This is pretty much my day-to-day use. Can you see into my study window? lol

Dev apps in one screen, VM's in the other, and I plan to use all 3 screens ;)

Seriously though, it would be great to see it in action.

This is the situation I'm currently in with my GTX560, although I'm aware it's because of lack of support in the card for 3 monitors.

He might still need an active display port to hdmi / dvi adaptor though :)

Checking reviews & google searches doesn't confirm 100% either way if one is still needed for running 3 screens on a 280.

d4ren, do you want to play BF4 across all 3 screens or would you just be using one?

Would be nice to utilise all 3 screens in BF4, but it's not a deal breaker. Getting all 3 screens running for work is a priority. I probably game a few hours a fortnight, compared with a solid 8-10 hours a day doing work.

Above everything, I just want something that is simple, so I'll happily pay more to make life easier.

I'd want more power for decent settings across 3 screens, however it should work on medium-low settings

Just found this on Anadtech in their 280x review :

" to drive 3 such monitors off of a single card, all 3 monitors must be timing-identical, which functionally speaking almost always requires the monitors to be completely identical. Furthermore the sharing of the clock generator can only be engaged/disabled upon boot, so the 3rd display cannot be hot-plugged and must be present at boot time. "

Since your 3 monitors are identical then the 280x should be fine but it would have to be one that has 2xdvi ports + 1xhdmi port, like the 2 links posted earlier by Shivy001 & tankskun.

2xdvi + 1xhdmi wont work on the 280x, one monitor has to be connected via an active display port adaptor if it doesn't have a display port on it.

Did you try this yourself NightSt@lker?

I'm not questioning you, I'm just trying to find a definitive answer so we all know what the right answer is.
The Anandtech review says 3 identical monitors over dvi/hdmi will work on the 280x due to changes in the onboard clock generators done by AMD :

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7400/the-radeon-r9-280x-review-feat-asus-xfx/3

But then again I've read differently when searching for an answer on Google...
