It's hardly the dumbest thing anyone has ever posted on line.

Got to be kidding, Arknor. A soldier chosen for a secret mission inside another country, with so much attention on it, and the information war going on, goes and uploads a pic from inside Ukraine (allegedly), and it's hardly the dumbest thing anyone's ever posted? Man, it would have to rank right up there.

For what it's worth, I just showed this thread to a friend, who said it reminded them of a recent trip just a couple of weeks ago, when their phone geo-tagged pics on two occasions as being taken in two different states in the west of the US, instead of the eastern state they were in.

But don't take their word for it (I do because this is one friend whom I trust implicitly). Just check out this Twitter hashtag:

Who do I believe ? Some guy on the tinterweb or the worlds media ? Tough one.

Lets see how this plays out before we jump the gun.

Funny that, because it was one guy on the tinterweb who put this out there, and a lot of media rolled with it, so apparently the world's media is inclined to believe some guy on the tinterweb.

The guy's name is Geoffrey Pyatt, US Ambassador to Ukraine, who was recorded plotting the coup against Yanukovich, along with Victoria Nuland (Assistant US Secretary of State).

You can easily find a copy of the recorded phone call on Youtube, should you wish to have a listen. :)

Lets see how this plays out before we jump the gun.

My sentiments too.

uh-huh
REALLY think that?
Just like the US soldiers who beat and chained up inmates posting pictures of themselves doing it.
Grunts don't care, Russian conscript grunts equally so.
Some follow orders, an you get a few idiots.

It is strange to think you don't consider this as a possibility, thinking more likely that military GPS is b0rked?

Might have been hacked like the other soldier, and a bit of GPS ghosting fiddling carried out.

Or an even simpler explanation:

The other possibility is that this guy was posting photos on the internet while on a secret mission in another nation's territory (unlikely).

Not really, you just didn't read carefully. I said it was a possibility but I find it unlikely. Don't know how you interpret the word "unlikely", but it still implies there's a possibility.

It was the first thing you said.

so posting photos is unlikely, massive GPS failure less so?

Geo-tagging failure of just a few miles wouldn't be as massive as showing a geo-tag for the other side of a continent or even the other side of the world, as you can see for yourself if you browse the Twitter hashtag I linked to.

He's not using military GPS...he's on Facebook, he's on his own phone or a civilian computer. If he's using military hardware he would be using glonass as he's Russian (the US don't tend to hand out access to military GPS decoding to the Russians). But I would be surprised if you can go on the internet using Russian military hardware

Literally the only options are glonass or civilian GPS.

If he's using his phone it can be a mile or so off as facebook just picks off from the nearest mast (my Facebook posts from a village about a mile away) but I don't think it would be as far off as people are claiming.

Because its on twitter doesn't mean its true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe GD is some huge FSB hack to confuse everyone, eh? How about that one! It certainly baffles me sometimes...

If your phone has GPS then location services use a combination of mobile cell, visible wi-fi networks, and GPS to tag a location. Using the cell mast only was a thing years ago before proper smart phones.

All mobiles sold in Russia recently need to support GLONASS unless they want to attract import duties, so the chances of the location tag being inaccurate are slim to none.
