torn between i5 and amd fx8320

In most games at real resolutions (1080p and up) with 1 GPU, at realistic FPS (30-120) there's no difference between the 83xx and i5. In fact, you might be just as well off with an FX 6300 or even FX 4xxx. What games are you into?

Looking at the build above though I could sacrifice the SSD . Sell the Free kingston and that build would be in budget.

Don't give up the SSD for a better CPU, it's the single best way to make the system feel snappy.

Mostly Battlefield 4 , The whicher 3 (when out) and Wow (when out).
Regards,
I thought maybe getting an 8 core may do well for the furture with the new Intel 6-8 cores coming out.

+1, no way should you give up the SSD for an i5, you will not see the performance difference from the CPU. but using the SSD is like night and day.

Edit: BF4? get the SSD or you will always be last on the map waiting around for ages for it to load up. be one of the first on the map loading it up in seconds.

The i5 is no different for performance to the FX-8320 in BF4

Nothing wrong with the AMD build you are looking at as the 8320 will OC with no problems at all, at some point add 2 exhaust fans to the top of that case and maybe a fan controller to manage the case temps and fan noise. if you do get a bit to much fan noise try adding some rubber O rings between the case and the fan as this does help with noise reduction I have found.

The Motherboard will control the Fans ^^^^^^^^^^^ it will have Fan profile setting in the BIOS. you don't need fan controllers these days.

yeah, i think that looks ok :)

Here's the shopping cart thingy http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18371076

Might want to edit your postcode out of the above!

Also I'd recommend getting the 550 W version of that PSU, unless you will be using a huge overclock on the CPU (4.8 GHz+) AND overclocking the GPU. At stock the whole machine will not use more than 400 W. (A CPU OC could add up to 100 W, bit less for the GPU.)

aha thank you.
Yes, I only added that PSU as I thought it's on offer anyway. But also thought 650watt would be enough for an Xfire setup in the future. Or would a 750watt be needed?
If so i'll get the 550watt.
Regards.

I see. However, with the gcard offer on at the moment I don't really want to wait. As with ordering 2 seperate orders for the different components I would probably end up spending the same on shipping costs.

I heard theres going to be price drops next month for team red, if the fx8350 goes sub 90 i'll be converting. AMD does offer value for money no doubt.

AMD's price/performance is very high already, it'd be bizzare to see them improve it anymore, although it's highly welcome.

That said, why would you downgrade on the basis of price/performance? Especially since that price/performance only really holds when you're buying brand new. Ridiculous logic.

For the sake of an SSD I'd take the FX83 + 280 any day, but I'd be inclined to take a hybrid SSD 1TB with a 4670K and 280 (Having set one of these up, although with a 290, I'm pretty impressed)

And if people applied the same logic they preach, most of you wouldn't own the GPU set up you do (Or in fact, the entire PC package you own), which is hilarious really, I mean, I'm reeling from the suggestion of an FX4300 for (As the OP wants) "High End Gaming".

This ones hard to call as it boils down to budget, what you need the system for and what parts you may already have. Going back some months the FX route was cheaper regardless of the stock cooler intel could get away with on a moderate overclock.

Considering I have had my FX for 9 months now with no AMD improvement on the horizon yet I am glad I didn't sit and wait.

Interesting points and valid. I am not in the category of "high end" for sure.

Oh and although I do not consider myself a grammar nazi, starting a new sentence with And is not just a schoolboy error! ;) (hilarious really)

I am a real idiot when it comes to AMD v Intel and nVidia v ATI.

In the end, I just get both.

Right now, I am torn betwee what PC I want to use as the Living room PC.

Currently using a Sabretooth 990FXR2.0 & AMD 8350 with 4x4GB GSKILL
Wanting to use the Saphire Black Mobo with the 6 Core I7 980 purely cos I got 24GB in it.

Plus, the AMD will allow me to use the 2 nVidia cards and the Intel can only do Crossfire. ( Currently the Intel is sat doing nothing and there is 2xGTX470 cards on the shelf, while the AMD is using the 2xATI )

Which one is better? I dont really know ?

Im in a similar state with my Meda Centre PC.

I knocked up a simple Intel and then decided to try out one of the new AMD CPUs and so went AMD, but then wanted a bigger case so I got a Zalman Media Cenyter case, but this could take full size boards and so I am using my Hexcore 3.2 AMD in there right now but then now that I can, I now also want to use my Flaming Blade Mobo and I7 again...Just because!

Again, I am an idiot.

The end of teh day mate, DONT spend any more when the upgrades that you buy, will only be a little bit better than what you already have!

You have to ask yourself, will the Games play a little bit better, or will it make the games play a whole load better?

More importantly,m will the ga,es you play, play over £600 worth better?

The AMD CPU is more tyhjan capable of playing anything you need it to.

Hell, my slowest Gaming PC on my Network is a 2.8 Ghz HexCore AMD with only 8GB and it plays games EXACTLY the same as my best PCs do.
I think perhaps Splinter Cell Blacklist, BattleField 4 and the COD series are maybe the most power hungry and they play absolutely the same.

Sure, if I benches them, you will see they dont, but as far as the actual game play... I have never seem bottlenecking of any kind, in fact come to think of it, the one and only time I ever saw any kind of BottleNecking was when I first bought UnReal Tournament 2004 and I had a glitch or two in the Junkyard level. I hada 9500 Radeon and it was a model that could softmod to 9700 and so I did it, it benched better but the game did not play any better... It only played better when I upped the RAM from 512MB to 1GB
Since that day, I have NEVER seen ANY form of bottlenecking at all on ANY of my PCs and I currently own 12 PCs and 7 Laptops.

Of course, I do see limits of the power of the machines, of course I do, but nothing that could be called bottlenecking based on the CPU as is often described here and in other forums... I often think that there is no such thing.

What I am tryign to say and failing cos Im waffling is stick to your AMD and dont fall for the thinking that the grass is greener because it sometimes simply is not... Its a placaebo and nothign more. Take it from me... I have 6 I7 PCs that are sat in my attic doing nothing but collecting dust!

( Ah, another reason I wanted to swap them for these two here )
