I have been trying unsuccessfully to build a Windows 7 system based on an Intel Z97 and an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD.
Kept getting BSODs and random crashes.

Googling about, I gather that there are compatibility issues with Z97 SATA controllers and this SSD.

Can anyone offer any help please? Might it be possible to resolve this problem with a firmware upgrade on the Vertex 2?

yeah its a known issue with old sandforce drives and z97 and also z87 chipsets

only way would be to use any third party sata ports like asmedia/marvell ect if you have them

theres no fix atm

maybe a usb to sata adaptor would work? idk

When I swapped from an X58 to my current Z97 build I had a 60Gb Vertex2. Initially windows started without a fuss but it soon bluse screened which I assumed to be because id not reinstalled windows with a new board but I couldn't for the life of me get it working using the vertex 2. In the end I had to go get a new SSD. I got a MX100 and had no issues at all with this :)

I had a similar issue, connecting via a PCIe to SATA adapter does solve it, or at least it did for the 5days I used it.
Have now upgraded anyway to a Samsung EVO 840.
