8Packs Ambient OC on Haswell E and 4ghz comparison with 4930K.

Damn, really? Now I'm giving serious thought to a 5930k.

The only bit of 5820k overclocking I've seen is Lauren's video here where she manages 4.6GHz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcaWHZxKel8

Lauren would have an ES which would be absolutely nothing like the actual 5820ks being shipped to people.

The last three launches Intel have pulled the old trick, send out loads of cherry picked chips.

Back in reality the 4770k was a terrible clocker, with some struggling to reach 4.2ghz, and that was only four cores.

As 8 pack has pointed out these are hot CPUs. Hotter than X79, which means clock speeds will be lower than X79.

You have to remember at all times that this is Haswell with more cores, more volts and more heat.

Edit. You also need to remember that the 5820k is highly likely to be the 5930ks that did not make the grade. It's easy for Intel to simply lock the lanes out of them...

It's kinda like the Pentium that just released. I've seen none go higher than 4.8ghz, yet you'd expect to easily sail past that given it's only two cores with no HT so heat would be at a minimum.

In that case then I'll hold fire and see what other people get. A shame, as I thought the IHS and soldered die would do quite well.

ALX your wrong about Haswell I have many first batch retail that do 5ghz air and 6.6ghz 32m etc on LN2.

Haswell E upto now ES do seem to be better.

I'm only going on what I've read around the internet, don't shoot the messenger.

SO the internet knows does it!! It tests such things to be the worlds number one overclocker!!

Really because in the video she says she didn't get the chips from Intel, or are you saying they shipped cherry picked ES chips to some retailers in the hopes she would buy one?

Nonsense as usual, Andy. Please go back to scribbling pictures of zombies all over your cases (see andy's buildlogs posts to understand).

The 5820k is a great CPU, for anyone needing more cores than the 4790k. It's far too early for anyone to be able to hazard a guess to the average overclock we consumers are likely to get with retails CPU's. Maybe in a month or two we'll be able to say for certain.

Regarding heat, it's worth remembering that all these intel CPU's, 4790k plus the Haswell -E cpu's, still all have far lower TDP than AMD's offerings. So it seems quite silly to be complaining that they run hotter than previous generations.

Anything Andy posts can be regarded as nonsense, just like in this case. He didn't bother to watch the video/description where it's clearly said she doesnt have a ES chip.

8pack have you had some time to have a look at those Avexir Platinums ??

I'm hoping he turns round and says they are brilliant...

layte well 3 weeks to my payday so :] 5820k is calling me :D. I hope they are good enough. Put some radiators on for looks and sorted :D

No but I am looking at a lot of RAM next week and hitting a review. I have GSKILL 3200, HyperX 2800, Corsair 2800 32gb and Avexir Plats to look at. This week been busy benching for ASUS Z97 comp and Kingston Comp
so using DDR3 for those.

Seeing as they've been out five minutes you'd do well to know anything.

Mine will do 4.8 with some work and maybe higher. And that's an 8 core

Seems like you struck lucky again in the silicon lottery MJfrosty. Good for you - hope I am as lucky if and when I buy in too X99.

Mark

5930k ordered:D

Now just the ram and a cpu block, seems ocuk haven't got much stock of ddr4 at the moment.

Hopefully they'll have more instock next week when I order the cpu block.

I'd wait for 19/09, when Kingston comes in stock.
That's what I am going for, most likely - 16gb 2666mhz.

Oh, by the way, 8Pack do you know if Haswell-E 'likes' fast memory, like normal Haswell?
Or it doesn't have any effect?

For sure it loves fast memory. Its Haswell architecture really benefits from memory bandwidth and cache speeds.
