New York

I can't book my seats yet (60 days apparently, but I can login and see all my details), looks like I fly out there with Virgin on an Airbus A330-300 and fly back with Delta (Virgin) on a Boeing 737-800.

Good planes?

Delta (used to - 2012) do "premium economy" seats for an extra ~£60 each way. You get 38" leg room and extra drinks etc (these were specific seats designed for it not exit row seats). You need to ask at checkin and they may be sold out when you get there but its a cracking deal if you get one. Especially good if you're tall.

I got a 1st class upgrade with Delta back from NY to Manchester for........$50 a few years back just by tipping the lad on the gate $50 for getting me 3 seats together on my own. Without me asking he 'sorted' me moving into First Class.

There is a mistake there as there is no way you will fly back to the UK on a 737.

I must have misread something or clicked a dodgy flight on Flight Tracker, looking at the booking it says 'Aircraft type 764' which points me towards a 767-400ER. V5402 is the flight I'm in.

How decent are the two planes I'm on?

Edit: Yeah something wrong with Flight Tracker, it shows the flight later today as going with a B763 but all previous flights have been with a B764L.

I was in New York a couple of weeks ago and stayed at the Intercontinental Barclay. Very good location on 48th and Lexington.

However, the walls were ridiculously thin. I heard the woman next door getting a good seeing to, I mean EVERYTHING.

763 is a 767 too, just a different version.

The A330 is Virgins newest plane (well, currently, the 787 enters service next month) with the latest gen touch screen IFE on board so excellent.

The Delta flight will be somewhat less good, even the newest 767s are about 15 years old and some of the 767 fleet dates from the late 80s.

One's a fluke/bribery, the others an official policy... :p

It'll be fine - this trick (booking your return flight through to another country via London, avoiding some large taxes for journeys ending in the UK, but getting off at London anyway) has existed for a long time and the airlines have ignored it.

You can do similar going out as well. I knocked about £160 off flights to San Diego by flying to Dublin first and taking a connecting plane back to London, which avoids a large tax for passengers originating from the UK. Dublin is always worth a look for long haul flights.

I doubt they will honour that. I'm sure there is a clause in their T&C's regarding incorrect pricing.

Well it's all booked and paid for, with the flights appearing on Virgins website too and it was booked through Expedia. It's not a glitch, as the poster above says, just a loophole.

Found the same deal on expedia as above (which I have more confidence in expedia having used them before), might check my passport when I get in see if it's still in date, and go for a trip just before my birthday in November.

How long do you need a passport valid for to go to the states, is it at least 6 months?

There was a back story, I'd had some pretty crap service from Delta and very much the run around when trying to pay for an upgrade in the preceding week, but it was a back hander than nailed the deal, no question.

I believe minimum is 6 months yes. When I go my old passport would've only had 3 months so I've just sorted a new one.

Don't forget to sort your ESTA :)

Just to hijack the thread a little does anyone have any recommendations on booking transfers to and from JFK?

From JFK to NY is fixed priced in a cab now, $56 I think which is the simplest.
