Our NEW MSI GS30 Shadow & GamingDock - Coming soon!

Any idea on price?

HQ are very tight lipped on it to be honest, but I was assured it will be priced very competitively .....

Which means...NOTHING at the mo :)

I will update when I get it.

I just wanted to let people know what's in the pipeline :eek::eek::eek::eek:

While i understand the benefits of a system like this (vastly improved cooling for one thing) im just not keen on this package at all.

The whole point of a small laptop is portability. Whats the attraction in putting this thing on a 13inch laptop?

On a desktop replacement like the GT72, ok i get it and would be interrested to see what could be done with a 17-18 inch laptop, but on a small notebook? Seems a bit counter intuitive to me.

It would definatly be more attractive on a NB with a bigger screen, although hopefully the smalle laptop will be a good price. I'll be using mine for my Oculus rift when it arrives, so the smaller laptop doesnt make any difference to me.

I would have to disagree.

A GT72 does not really need a dock. It has enough power and upgradability.

This GS30 in itself is a very powerful, very light NB. Imaging if you wanted to take it to uni, or on a business trip. Longer battery life (no dedicated Nvidia GPU = longer battery). Imagine if during the days it just did browsing and word programs. This weighs 1.3KG....which is nothing really. Perfect for putting in your rucksack or bag.

But at night times, imagine you wanted to game, or you wanted to game at home in general? Then dock it, use an external monitor (which I am sure allot of people do including me - I have a 28" connected to my GS70 at home with a mechanical KB & decent mouse). Then this is perfect. I would not suggest taking a GT72 to uni to do work....you would need it plugged in as it's a bit of a beast. This is for someone who wants the best of both worlds. A high end NB with great on board graphics, super fast SSD and an I7 for daily work, and then when he wants to play - then he can have the latest desktop GPU like a titan (if they wanted) and play everything seamlessly on ultra.

I work for MSI -and of course....I am not going to slate anything they do, but for me, this is one of the best ideas I have seen, and speaking to ALLOT of students and doing allot of University visits, I know this will be very exciting for them.

Their biggest concerns were always that a gaming laptop was too bulky to take to Uni and back every day...well no more of that, and no heat issues etc either!

Super thin, super light, super up gradable!

I don't get the point when you could just buy an ultra book and desktop system, it'll be similar money.

Laptop is super thin and super light.

Desktop is even more upgradable with a proper sized screen.

I could understand if it was a bit more ergonomic (ie connected by a cable out of the way) but a giant shoebox you have to clip your laptop onto is plain daft. What power supply is in the dock?

Sometimes having 2 PC's isn't everyone's cup of tea!

This is down to taste - and personally, I think this will be a good unit.

On the spec side of things on the GamingDock - I will post more on here when I know.

The price point also isn't known, so it's not something I can comment on really.

I think it's a great idea, and know it will come in handy for the people that it's targeted at.

More info to follow soon(ish) :D:D

Good on you guys for innovating. Not sure it's for me, as I need my gaming power on the go, but I'm all for manufacturers trying new stuff!

Thanks buddy!

It's not like we are pulling our whole gaming range off sale for this! This is just an addition to our range, and I think for some people it's what they wanted.

It's exactly what I've been looking for to be honest.

I have a desktop, 280x hex core xeon but I would really like a gaming laptop so that I can free up some space. I hate the idea of spending £1500 on a laptop, for it to be outclassed by modern games and having no way to upgrade. Laptop Gpu's are inherently over twice as much as their desktop counterparts and no where near as powerful.

This solves that, as cpu development is an awful lot slower than gpu's. Plus this allows me to sit anywhere in my house, rocking out with the oculus rift where the 13 inch screen isn't important.

Great to finally see this concept realised - although I would have been very interested in something l like this over 5 years ago, now unfortunately I'm not. Better late than never, although for me the market has changed.

Mobile gpus are already powerful enough to handle most games at decent settings such that needing a dedicated gpu dock is IMO no longer necessary - the only benefit being that you can easily upgrade your graphics card at any point in the future.

In addition to this mitx machines are now commonplace that you can easily build a tiny powerful desktop for use at home and carry a separate non-gaming laptop for other uses. Given that with this laptop docked with the graphics box like that you will likely also be using an external monitor, keyboard and mouse - it stands to reason that it's much easier to build a dedicated mitx machine for this purpose and carry a separate ultrabook.

The only benefit for this kind of laptop now is having everything on one machine instead of two machines. The other benefit is if the laptop itself is priced very low - say ~£600-£800 (with the desktop graphics card say being ~£150 above that) allowing this solution to be much cheaper than buying a dedicated mobile gpu - so you get better value by putting up with a messy system.

I prefer the portability of being able to carry everything around with you, even if that means being limited with an 860m, which at the moment is more than poweful enough for most modern games at standard resolutions.

I was really looking forward to a 14" version of the GS series to be released. think this idea is pretty cool but it's certainly not that convenient. I'm a student and I have the MSI GS70 (which is too big to take to lectures) so i guess in that sense this notebook would be good.

I think aesthetically it could look a lot better than this. In my opinion it's kind of gone downhill from the GS70 (which i think looks amazing) to this GS30 which to me looks like a cheap laptop. Sorry! just my opinion.

I'm interested to see the price point and I think that could definitely win this thing over but for me I would want a notebook that had the GPU integrated inside it.

It's great to see MSI innovating though! One thing which could be amazing is allowing this docking station to be used with other laptops. That would sell like crazy!

I love the idea, for me if it could drive an external monitor from the dock (which l assume it can) it makes great sense, and as long as the propriety connector on the dock is compatible with the next upgrade (next gen) of laptop it would be a real winner.
