Backup to Synology DS112/Buffalo NAS

Hi guys

I bought a Synology DS112 a while ago and never really utilised it. I also bought a Buffalo NAS a few years ago, which the DS112 was intended to replace.

I was planning on doing a regular backup to the DS112 and then a (weekly?) backup to the Buffalo, or possibly buying a WD Passport and using that instead of the Buffalo.

And lastly a backup of work files to the cloud. (But ideally I want to maintain the folder structure - is that possible?)

My backup needs are relatively simple, so I have been using Karen's Replicator which is light and does the job with no fuss.

Could anyone suggest an approach which might be better than this? I'm also interested in what software you are using for your own backup needs.

Thanks!

You could use Crashplan to continuously backup to either of the NAS units. It only saves changes to files which keeps the backup size down. It would also mean you could restore to any moment in time, so if you accidentally delete something you can always go back and retrieve it.

A possibility for the other NAS unit would be to ask a friend / family member to set it up at their home, then you could use crashplan to back up there as well over the internet. That'd be your on and off site backups sorted.

How much space do you need for your work files? I think an Office 365 subscription is excellent value because it includes 1TB of OneDrive cloud space.

Thanks for the reply.

Crashplan isn't something I've considered; would the free version suffice for most purposes? It sounds like exactly what I'm after.

I wouldn't need an awful lot of space. Certainly 1 TB would be more than enough. Do you know if Office 365 maintains a folder structure, or would I have to compress everything first if I wanted that? Currently I'm using Dropbox and I find it somewhat clumsy.

Yeah, the only paid part of Crashplan is backing up to their cloud. Everything else is free.

The cloud part of Office 365 is OneDrive which pretty much works like drop box. You have a regular Windows folder which is synced to the cloud. So if drop box doesn't quite work for you then you may need another solution. Others may have better suggestions :)

Thanks for the tips! Downloaded Crashplan and it's currently backing up. Had to map the Synology as a VHD to get Crashplan to see it.

Currently getting about 45 Mbps which isn't too bad I suppose.

I think my next foray will be into cloud storage. Will post back if anything changes/I find something else out.

Thanks again. :)
