Is a wise business strategy limit the number of products for sale?

I have just had a conversation with my housemates. They said Apple may as well sell more and get more money. I said its much better strategy to limit stock so more people want them.

Is this similar to what is done with sale of diamonds? i.e they hold some back to increase (and decrease) the price when needed

Limit the number of product (choice) or limit stock?

They are not the same thing.

But simple supply and demand economics and basic human psychology that you want what you can't have, up to a point.

They could produce a billion more iPhones than they need and they would still sell for whatever price they wanted to sell them at.

The sensible thing for Apple to do would be to produce a lesser specced iPhone for the Asian markets and get them tied in to the Apple ecosystem but they won't even do that.

I do believe they could produce more if they wanted to but if it sells out like it has the 3-4 week delay will have newspapers/customers talking about it for the same length of time.

Free advertising making it seem so desirable(it is to some) shoved in the face of everyone in reach of the Internet.

Keep this on topic and it can remain open otherwise it'll just get closed again.

How about we have an Apple debate in GD without it descending into trolling, insults and "my phone is better than your phone"?

Feek,

The point of a forum is to be able to express opinions and thoughts within the theme of the topic. Not for posts to be deleted because of perceived 'trolling'.

I'm sure I can refer you to many posts where the conversation has deviated from the original question.

Keep consistent.

am pretty certain my removed posts had no my phone is better than yours it was simply pointing out benefits on both
But anyway apples strategy is a good one as i already said keeping the variations of devices down allows the os to be simplified and efficiently run which keeps costs down.
Most manufacturers have a shortfall on original supply and demand this will even out after a period of time

I completely agree, however the thread had already gone well outside the "theme of the topic" within six posts from being started.

They make a cheap phone. It was the 4s. It's now the 5c.

Four million pre-orders in one day. They couldn't make more if they wanted to, the plants can't output enough.

Indeed. Love 'em, hate 'em or be indifferent you've at least got to admire that they're top of their game right now.

Them sweat shops are working their socks off.
it amazes me that 4 million need the new features in this phone over the old (sorry last gen ) model i wonder if apple have engineered these to have batteries last just one year then a proprietary screw so no one but apple can replace them just days out of warraty battery replacement £200 new model on another new contract £50 max even free see where this is going apple dont sell great products they sell a great brand

It's called Built In Obsolesence and is absolutely a thing in basically every market.

It's hardly like they have a shortage of cash they could probably build a few more Foxconn factories.

To be blunt if the news stories are true(idk) then there's certainly no shortage of slave labour around the world to exploit.

Although I guess either of the above eat into profit margins.

which would then sit idle once the initial demand subsides. They have enough to capture most early supply, without having too much unused resource when the rush ends...

And that is exactly why I don't run a company producing things :D.

Very good point.
