Hey Guys,

I bought a new 4k tv a few months ago (SAMSUNG UE55HU8200) and hooked my PC up to it yesterday to try it out. The problem is I could only get it to run at 30Hz which really isn't worth playing anything on. The tv supports hdmi 2.0 which as I understand it should allow for 4k at 60hz and I do have a 1.4 hdmi cable.

I'm wondering if this is actually possible with my current cards. i'm running off two MSI R290s. Any ideas if AMD support 60hz through hdmi yet ? I read that recently nvidia had released drivers to support hdmi 2.0, has AMD ?

I also read on another forum someone said to use a DP cable and then a DP to HDMI adapter at end. Not sure if this is worth trying.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kev

A few of us are hoping for DisplayPort -> HDMI 2.0 active adapters but for now you're only real option is an Nvidia 970/980.

DisplayPort 1.3 will natively support HDMI 2.0.

You need to try direct Mini Displayport to HDMI 2.0 Cable. NOT simple female adapter to plug HDMI cable.

the mDp on the 290 will support TV 4K @ 60hz since it's spec is DP 1.2 HBR2
That is not an issue, nor is an issue that it will see the TV as HDMI 1.4.

The point is to get the correct cable that it will do the job, and not adapters.

Belkin Mini Displayport to HDMI Cable, HDMI 2.0 Compatible
Product code F2CD044bt06

It only cost few pounds, just try it and if it doesn't work, send it back and tell us if did or didn't work :)

Some had success with that cable and the 290s. But all depends the TV also.
Worth a shot though.

Thanks for the tip Panos, I'll check it out. The cards only have normal DP not mini, think it's worth getting a proper DP to HDMI 2.0 adapter or better to just get a DP to mini DP Converter and use the belkin cable you mentioned ?

The belkin cable only works as a hdmi 2 adaptor when used with apple thunderbolt products, check the compatibility list on the belkin site, it wont work with pc cards

Ouch :(

You can try dp to mdp and then the dp to hdmi 2.0 cable.

Good luck though :(

One thing to mention is cable length, I hooked up my PC to my LG 4K set and sue to the 15m hdmi cable it wont even give me a 4k signal even at 30hz, only a 1080p. I keep meaning to move the PC closer to see if it will accept a 4k signal then.

Ok well I was gonna go with the Belkin cable to try out, andybird can you send link to the post your referring to please. Has anyone actually had an success trying to attain 60Hz at 4k on R290s ? If not the Belkin cable are there any others you would advise, i'm open to any suggestions.

Not via hdmi no, the current Amd cards dont support hdmi2.0, nvidia support 60hz 4k via 4:2:0 subsampling (which is the same level of support some tv's have), but ive not seen anyone actually try that either

Here is the guy that tried the belkin cable and belkin replied to his support email to tell him that it only works with apple products;

Currently the only reliable way to get 4k@60 from a pc is to use display port on both ends
