That "next-gen" feel

"next gen" isn't just about graphics and special effects to me its about the ideas that the developers are coming out with.

An example of this is MGS 5. Yes it has amazing graphics but game play wise you can approach the missions in different ways and things change each time. Yes it is on last gen consoles but as I said its not just about graphics.
GTA 5 with its huge open world and detail and all the things to do and 3 switchable characters had next gen thinking with the heists and I feel that if it hadn't come out on last gen it would have improved on those ideas even more.

It will take time for the true "next gen" games to come out but from what I've seen so far I'm very excited

Not really tbh most is cross platform or up res ports of last gen games :/ maybe towards the end of 2015 we will see some stuff!

The p.t demo has the best visuals and atmosphere so far imo

To make AAA titles financially viable, they also need to be developed for last gen consoles, which have a huge user base. We won't see the best out of the new gen consoles until there's the user base available to make development of exclusively 'new gen' titles feasible.

IMO, anyway.

was just about to post something similar myself ... well said

That's sort of true. We are seeing even now some games that are exclusively new gen releases but at the same time publishers need to make money by making other games that are also cross gen. Publishers won't ditch last gen consoles until probably 2016.

I have a feeling this gen will be over before it's even started. MS will not put up with 900p versions of games whilst the PS4 runs away with 1080p. I suspect we'll have new systems by 2017.

Resolution isn't the prime factor of the graphical quality of games.

It's so sad that most people seem to think it is.

Microsoft have already told Blizzard that 900p was unacceptable for Diablo III. So they clearly think it's an issue.

I'm more interested in seeing developers use the extra power for AI, physics etc than just chasing the 1080p/60fps dream. It's been at least a decade since Half Life 2 and it's still a rarity to see decent physics implemented in action/FPS/adventure games.

Nothing current gen (next gen stopped being relevant after ps4/xb1 was launched) has really made my jaw drop but then I'm not solely a console gamer so I suspect that is why. I was impressed with the visual on inFAMOUS though and AC IV.

It's a pretty big one though. I remember switching between 1080p and 720 on FF XIV and it was a huge difference. Just as it is keeping the settings the same on my PC and playing on a 1080p and then 1440p monitor.

Gameplay wise Metal Gear Solid V feels the most next gen to me, also quite a looker. Based purely on graphics im going to have to say Killzone Shadow Fall, even though the game itself is very average.

It's certainly relevant, no dispute there, but it's not the number one factor, and lowering the resolution to enable some more advanced effects to be used, can and does result in games looking overall better than lesser graphical effects but a higher resolution.

Agree, like when on PC sometimes lowering res to enable higher settings overall improves!

It is an issue to M$ because we the consumers make it an issue. If there wasn't all the marketing and willy waving of PS4 1080p and XB1 900p than I really doubt M$ would care but because people think it is so important it has become an advertising tool and therefore costing M$ money.

Exactly this, I hoped the XB360 / PS3 power over the XB / PS2 would lead to this and, with a very few exceptions, it never happened. The extra grunt of this gen over last could be used to improve game play so much rather than look shiney graphics but I don't hold out much hope.

Half life 3 would be amazing though.

Because they aren't "Next-Gen" they are the current generation.

Why do you keep trotting this out? It's clear to everyone what is meant.

Consoles are never going to be the powerhouses we want them to be because they're cheaper than even a midrange gaming PC. Early games are always a bit underwhelming as the developers don't have the access to or experience with the hardware.

If you look at what Rockstar got out of the 360/PS3 with GTAV it's clear that it's possible to extract big things from a console but it takes time. Prevously there's been less pressure on resolution between generations but the XB1/PS4 have had to deliver increased res/FPS and graphical improvements.

Its both Sonys and MS doing too - dont forget things like an achievement for preordering the most powerful console in the world and advertising 1080p games from the get-go. You cant blame consumers for jumping on such differentiators if thats how they were presented...

It might not suit them now, but my god they made their own bed with such marketing

ps3ud0

That is a good point, in reality it is probably more of a chicken or the egg question. They wouldn't advertise it if it didn't help sell consoles and people probably wouldn't care if it wasn't so heavily advertised.

Because people keep demonstrating that they have no idea what generation means, hence "Herp derp next gen" and "herp derp TRUE next gen" nonsense.

I'll stop when they do, which'll probably be never.
