Putting warnings on Tom and Jerry cartoons that it may be considered racist as it depicts a black maid.

Come to think of it, I haven't even seen it on British TV for a while and it was one of the best cartoons ever.

Will the PC ever stop!

Those cartoons were made in a different time, things that were considered OK back then are no longer. The warning is appropriate.

Hiring a black maid isn't ok? Wouldn't not hiring a maid because they're black be racist itself?

This is what society has come to. Harmless cartoon classic needing warnings like this.

So every maid in every cartoon, film, series, etc. can not be black, through fear of racism?

Black maids existed... and still do...

Very odd, in what way is this racist? The act of employing black people for only menial jobs is, but the historic and factual depiction / representation of what went on isn't. Are we supposed to hide our kids away from everything that happened in history?

*sigh* it's the violence between Tom and Jerry that has caused this to be removed from TV scheduling.

Stop being so over sensitive and eager to jump on the anti-PC bandwagon. You (and OP) are as easily offended as those you accuse of being easily offended.

It isn't PC, and it isn't just the "depiction" of a black maid. It's the specific way in which she was depicted. The way she looked and acted. The character was based on a stereotype of a slave worker. So no it's not because the character was black, it was because of what the character represented.

It's the point that the character is based on a stereotype of a worker that wasn't employed, but a slave.

From my memory you only saw her legs... with the occasional broom. She spoke like a black person (voice actor was black) and she did maid stuff.

Yup, racist.

EDIT: Did it cross anyones mind, before this thread, that T&J was at all racist?

To a kid it's just a black maid. I watched T&J as a kid and never gave a thought to the maid. I didn't like her because she was always horrible to Tom though :D.

Honestly this is just nonsense, making a problem where there isn't one as usual. No one cares and if they do then they must have an amazing life if something as insignificant as this gets them riled up.
